Hard to beat a small revolver for reliability . No little auto can match the little revolver in this regard

I have several small carry pistols and I find my LCP the one I always carry. I can dress in shorts or a suite and the LCP always fits. I have 2 LCP's, I will look at some of the above mentioned pocket guns and compare. I remember someone saying he has a 45 when we were talking about pistols, I asked him to let me see it and he said it was at home.

"In both weapons and other things, one should not be biased in favor of one thing over another. Too much is the same as too little. Do not imitate or mimic others; one must have a weapon appropriate to one's size and comfortable in one's hand. It is bad for either commanders or rank-and-file soldiers to have likes or dislikes. You must think out these things."

I have to chime in against revolvers. No doubt they are more reliable than any auto. I got my S&W hammerless airweight as my carry gun.

But they are porky little buggers. I'm slim and I find it difficult to find a place to put it. Ankle holsters or the large pockets on cargo shorts are about all that works. I don't want to have to wear extra layers of clothing or change my wardrobe just to carry. I've been looking at at slim 9mm as well. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not a big fan of the subcompact semi especially with a poly frame. Every one I've owned was always a finicky lil *****. Too many moving parts with a small frame, and I wouldn't trust a budget manufacturer poly product either. Too many bad experiences across the board with reliability and stupid things breaking...

The Smith I carry is light, and a real all metal gun. It's small and I know it'll work in a split second...Lighter than any Glock or Sig semi you'll find out there.

You don't have to step down to .380 to get into a concealable pistol. The EMP can be had in 9mm and .40 cal. Unlike a lot of the .380 pocket pistols the EMP is very reliable. Plus it's all metal and you can swap grips to suit your style. This pistol fits in th epalm of my hand and I have medium to small hands.

onewhippedpuppy 10-10-2013 09:47 AM

EMP is nice, but $1200?!

I like my Ruger LCR in 38+P and shoot it well. It is very light and find it works well in an ankle holster onr IWB carry. I wont argue with the fact that a revolver is wider due to the cylinder than some small autos. But, notoriously, small autos have reliability issues. I think I would buy a S&W Shield due to its slim nature and very good reliability. It is not as small as many but it comes in either 9mm or 40 S&W so is a decent performer.

Fortunately I'm not into the "stole my little brother's clothes" look - AKA slim fit that seems to be in vogue these days, and I think id look ghey in spandex so the whole 1/8" extra width of a revolver don't bother me :)

Gotta be slim to wear slim fit and skinny jeans, that rules me out pretty quickly.

I decided to check out the Sig 938 today. I don't need a small CCH but one wonders. I like the 9mm aspects from a logistics point of view. The fewer types of ammo the better.

The local Bait and Tackle shop sells guns so I stopped in. They had the full array: Sigs, Ruger, some cheaper stuff, etc.

First impressions on the 938: Built like JoeBob's ex, which is to say well (last reference I promise). They managed to scale the quality of their larger pistols down. Neat trick.

Small. Really small. This was the first time I have fiddled with this class of pistol and it is a little disconcerting at first. I have nowhere to put my pinkie and the ring finger next to it slides off. I'd need practice. My Hi-Power and full size .45's fit my hand like C cup.

The ergonomics are good, however, so the safety was well positioned and the slide is up so I felt comfortable.

Amazing amount of oomph for the size and weight. I need to shoot one just to make sure this class of pistol is comfortable getting it up and out and ready to go to work.

I've shot an M&P Shield 9mm a fair amount. I was a little skeptical about such a small gun. I shot Redbeard's P3AT which is a 380 and didn't enjoy it. Prior to this, I've owned an XDM in 9mm and and XDM 3.8 compact in 9mm. The 7 round magazine in the Shield fits my fingers with the pinky partially on and the 8 round mag fits all of my fingers. Both of which were a surprise. Not only that, but the recoil on the Shield felt softer to me than the recoil on the full size gun which is weird. The Shield is 19.5oz while the XDM is over 26oz, and that's without ammo and with the short magazines (7rd vs 13rd). I swear the recoil is nicer in the Shield, but it's not bad in the XDM. I just expected the Shield to kick a bit more. It was amazingly comfortable to shoot and as accurate with me shooting as the XDM. It's a very nice gun to shoot.

Sorry....personal opinion is that small concealable pistols should be just that....small with minimal moving parts and uncomplicated.

The Sig......too busy.

My Lil' fren', baby .357. Three moving parts, the trigger, cylinder and the release....

I have to be honest, revolver aficionados tend to be traditional, and a poly-framed handgun does not impress. But man is the LCR sweet. Very light, and you can get it in .357 magnum. Even with full-house magnum rounds it is shootable and while the recoil is pronounced, it is not abusive. It manages to combine, small, light and shootable attributes that make it comfortable to carry and shoot. The trigger is very nice. If you're looking for a carry piece, you really should check it out.

I did not realize that the EMP had gone up so much. I purchased my when they first came out and got what I thought was a pretty good deal. I paid $700 about 3 years ago. Didnt realize that I was packing such a pricey little pistol around...

RANDY P 10-10-2013 12:57 PM

.38 is perfect (for me) in a revolver. Manageable and easy to use fast... I HATE shooting high power mini revolvers. Nasty recoil.

HardDrive 10-10-2013 01:01 PM

I was at the range yesterday shooting my .38 after a long time. As long as my target is the size of a water buffalo, and standing 10 feet away, I'm in good shape. Otherwise, I think I need some more range time!

Yes you do need to shoot one. ;) I love mine, and I'm about as accurate with it as I am my 9mm XD. Its a nice little carry piece, that I can stick in a Nemesis holster in my front pocket just like an LCP. Except I've got more boom boom and trijicon sights. ;)

Shooting it can best be described as crisp. It doesn't kill you or try to jump out of your hand, but it does let you know its there. The slide is stiff when new, but after 200rds mine is either getting better or I'm used to it. The mag is really stiff to load actually. After about 50rds my thumbs are getting numb from loading, but one of those loading peg things would help that.

Here's mine... ;)

I checked out the LCP, LC9, and TCP when I bought this, and those just didn't feel as good. I fell in love with this and had to have it.

Thanks for all the input I am in the final process of getting my CCW. I have an LCP right now but will look at the others.
