Have you done much of a real-life battery test on it? The one we have floating around only lasts 4-5 hours, which made me prefer the RT the first time around for iPad like stuff, or RDP.

First RT is really slow though, considering a new one. Played with a Lenovo RT a couple weeks ago that was the worst tablet ever, 20+ seconds to load apps. Pointless.

netbook....

Great but according to my 17 year old son, Apple is COOL and Microsoft is NOT COOL.

Neilk 10-23-2013 01:44 PM

Has Microsoft solved the extraordinary amount if time it takes to wake a PC sleep? My Dell work laptop takes 3-5 minutes before you can do anything, probably due to the extra security software, but needless to say, I waste a lot of time waiting for it to awake in Windows 7? So I am wondering if the Windows tablets have that issue as well.

Does the tablet have a near instant wake capability? My 5 year Macbook now takes 10 seconds, Ipad 2 about 1 second.

island911 10-23-2013 01:54 PM

Yeah, Neil, it's fast start, like an ipad.

The indicator moves all over. Under light use, it was saying 10+ hours. I used it lightly, for 4-5hrs, started loading apps from an external hard drive and the meter said 2hr ? min's . . . so I plugged the power back on.

Others have done real-world battery testing with good outcomes. ...good enough for my use. OTOH, I really dislike that the battery is built-in.

MysticLlama 10-23-2013 01:57 PM

Yes, the wake up is much faster in 8 than it was in 7.

Also, tablets all have SSDs or flash memory which make a big difference. My laptop at home is only about 15 seconds to be useable from a cold boot. I usually just keep it fully shut down in between to save the marginal extra power.

I get it, you have AAPL stock. Cant resist the urge to demonize everything else.

Hey, Why doesn't Apple have a cool keyboard cover like the cool MICROSOFT design? :D

I heard a rumor that they plan to knock off / copy MICROSOFT's design.

Seriously, what is wrong with you Apple fanboys. Microsoft does PLENTY wrong. No need to lie and spin the slights on the product. (read: Surface Pro is not a puny 'netbook' nor ipad.)

That's probably due to how your work laptop was built and the kind of crap that IT had ruining on it. It may not be as quick as 10 secs, but XP or 7 can both be back up and running in less than a minute, even in a low powered machine.

Have you noticed IE 11 rendering the underline for links oddly?

I have this problem on here, some have a bit of space under the letters, some have the underline right against them. But not so sure if it's a IE change or a video driver thing just yet.

My guess is the different zoom settings is causing problems.

It looks fine on mine, btw.

That was my original thought, since I usually run at 85% instead of 100%, but here it is at 100:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382567629.jpg

So probably a driver issue. I asked on the this thread because I figured if anything had a well tested for 8.1 vid driver, it'd be the Surface that launched with it.

Yet you titled it "netbook." -- That's like calling a Macbook Pro a netbook.

My whole point to this thread was that we can now get some serious power in a compact package. It can drive multiple big monitors via Displayport, and it has a pen digitizer built in.

Lot's of performance densely packaged - that shouldn't be so ego threatening. Sony and Samsung also have some great offerings, (i7's and under 2lbs) but those lack the big monitor drive (HD limited) and lack the digi-pen.

Ah, I see it it now.

I am seeing that too.

I'd say this was a computer issue, not a Microsoft issue. My laptop (a fairly plain Jane HP) takes no more than 15 seconds to "wake up." *edit* Forgot to mention, that it's running Win 7.

I wanted to like the original surface, but came away wholly unimpressed with the whole thing because of Windows 8.

And no its not a religion for me. I just like stuff that works when I turn it on. ;) But I have been playing with running Virtual Box and XP just for ****s and giggles, because I like to have options.

Oh and apple does make mobile workstations, they call them the macbook pro. Its funny how you bash the iPad because its not a workstation. Hell even apple will tell you thats not what it is for. Its a browsing and email device, and it kicks ass at that. I love mine for sending emails and using to show pictures, videos, and drawings in sales presentations. Its fast, simple, and elegant unlike my dell laptop running Win 7 pro which makes me look like a bumbling idiot because of all the stupid crap I have to do to get logged in and get online.

We tried demo-ing MacBook Pros for running our CAD/CAM applications.

It underperformed compared to traditional laptop PCs.

Hydro - Exactly. GPU's make big differences for engineers with assemblies of 3D models opened in multiple instances. Analysis, running tool-path.... Whereas gaming machines usually have just one high demand instance running (a game prog.)

You flatter yourself. I just checked. (ease to search that) And DAMN you start a LOT of threads on Apple. Of those, RARELY do I chime in. And when I do, rarely am I snarky - well, no more than any other thread. Apparently the very few times I have chimed in on your multitude of iPhone/iPad/iPeed threads have really gotten under your skin. You're reacting here like a woman scorned. :-/

Wow, why are you being such as douce?!

I asked a couple key questions I wanted answers to, and also posted how much I liked the Apple event, so I'm an idiot fanboy?

I have several windows computers, a windows phone 8, ipads, iphones and android tablets as part of my job. I would love a surface if they solved the problems I was asking about and dropped the price.

And by the way your comment about a device to get real work done shows how little you know. I can do everything I need to for business on a daily basis on my iPad as I could on a PC other than Visio. I have access to domain shares can edit files, VPN, access to corporate email, access internal websites and take documents with me wherever I go that automatically sync back to the CIFS shares....

I'm done with this thread.

let me know what real world battery life is like, are you going to join to to a domain?
What are you all in cost wise?

Thanks,

PS - The Apple event today kicked MS's ASS!

Well, I addresses the battery life Q. (too early to tell - see post 25)
Prices are EASY to find IF you didn't come here just to spin this off to " Apple event today kicked MS's ASS!" - you started a thread on that (redundant pile-on redundancy?)

So the Q is, why are you being such a deuce?
