Unfortunately, the way natural habitat is being destroyed, poaching, i.e. just due to mankind in general, zoos are the only place you can see some species of animals and many more species are heading that way fast.

We went to Sea World in San Antonio about 3 years ago. Although the Killer Whale show was cool, I thought the pool it is confined to was ridiculously small for such a large animal. Worse yet was the Olympic sized dolphin feeding pool that must have contained 30+ dolphins all looking for food and being harassed by onlookers.

I don't plan on going back and giving them any more of my money.

Regardless of your opinion about keeping Orcas in captivity, the show "Blackfish" is so completely one sided that it does their cause no good.

Seaworld did not need to appear, either, to make the show fair. I am sure there are plenty of scientists on both sides of this issue that could have been interviewed. And many of the people they DID interview have a vested interest in appearing!

It was a meaningless, one-sided movie that could have been good. Instead, it was aimed at appealing to our human emotions, not our brains.

Why do you say this film did not appeal to our brains? That statement is the same as saying those who are in agreement with the film....and have issue with Sea World holding Killer Whales in captivity are not using their brains.

Doesn't matter to me whether it was one sided or not....

There is not enough good possible, to allow for keeping Orcas in captivity.
Period.
Not enough good possible.

Arrogant , intelligent humans are their own worst enemy.

NOOOO - they ruin their argument by making an emotional appeal rather than a logical or scientific argument.

Daepp is right. I'd have paid more attention if in the first 10 minutes it wasn't an obvious infomercial with only one point of view. A balanced documentary that allowed me to form an opinion based on both sides of the story would have been more effective. I changed the channel as soon as it became clear that I wasn't going to get all of the perspectives to consider.

That kind of "reporting" sends up a red flag that makes me question the integrity of the one side presented.

Typical CNN. Infotainment...not news.

I don't really care if you watched and/or thought the documentary was what you thought it should be.

Orca's do not belong in captivity.

If you want to argue that point - have at it.....

That's true Baz but that also applies (IMO) to Lions, Tigers, Elephants, Rynos, Chimpanzees, Gorrilas etc etc etc...

I'm not saying it's a good thing but it's been going on for so long now what can you realistically expect now?

We're arguing two different points. No one is saying it's not wrong. My point is that the CNN piece would have been more effective and had more impact if it was less "sensational" and offered an intelligent person the opportunity to hear from both sides.

And....I don't care if you don't care!

Hello Peter,

I only started this thread to discuss Orca's....and the film "Blackfish", although you are correct - there are many other examples of abuse of animals by humans.

Orcas are a species with certain social aspects - some of which are documented in "Blackfish".

If someone wants to discuss other animals and/or their abuses that is fine with me.

As far as your last statement.....it's been going on so long - I wonder if Mandela pondered the same thing when he set out to battle against apartheid?

I think those who care will speak out - as this documentary does.

"Blackfish" is like junk science - the more they make, the less we care. That is why I protest.

Joan Jett orders SeaWorld to stop torturing whales with “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” - Salon.com

Quote:
I was surprised and upset to see on YouTube that SeaWorld used “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” as the opening music for its cruel and abusive “Shamu Rocks” show. I’m among the millions who saw Blackfish and am sickened that my music was blasted without my permission at sound-sensitive marine mammals. These intelligent and feeling creatures communicate by sonar and are driven crazy in the tiny tanks in which they are confined. If I don’t receive written confirmation that SeaWorld will cease and desist from using any Joan Jett & the Blackhearts music, I will be forced to take further action, and you’ll find me among the PETA protesters outside your parks.

Sea World’s reliance on cruelty and captivity for commerce has been widely exposed. I hope you’ll take the respectable path and release the captive orcas to coastal sanctuaries so that they can live out their lives with other orcas in nature. This move would show that your company is truly family-friendly.

REO Speedwagon -- 'Blackfish' Moved Us ... We're Quitting SeaWorld Gig Too

REO Speedwagon -- 'Blackfish' Moved Us ... We're Quitting SeaWorld Gig Too | TMZ.com

Quote:
REO Speedwagon is taking a stand against Sea World's alleged abuse of its Orcas -- TMZ has learned the band just pulled out of an upcoming concert there ... following in the footsteps of several other high profile acts.

Sources close to REO Speedwagon tell us their cancellation is directly related to the documentary "Blackfish" ... which exposed alleged killer whale abuse at the aquatic amusement park.

The concert is supposed to go down in February at the Orlando, FL park -- but Cheap Trick, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Barenaked Ladies, and Heart had already backed out.

Sea World says it expects "other artists will be targeted" by the campaign to organize a protest. They added they're going to book other bands to fill the open slots.

To me there doesn't even need to be ANY science behind it....

Orcas just shouldn't be in captivity.
Nothing benefits them for being held at all.
Only for money, plain and simple.

More recording artists cancelling appearances at Sea World........

http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/16/showbiz/seaworld-martina-mcbride-cancels/

Martina McBride, 38 Special, cancel SeaWorld gig over 'Blackfish' backlash

(CNN) -- Add Martina McBride and 38 Special to the list of musical acts canceling SeaWorld shows because of issues raised in the documentary "Blackfish."

"I've decided that given all the issues that have been aired recently, the time isn't right for me to play at Seaworld," the singer posted on her Facebook page over the weekend. "I have canceled my scheduled performance at the Bands, Blues & BBQ event in March 2014."

The announcement makes her at least the seventh to drop out.

The southern rock band 38 Special quickly followed with this Facebook posting: "Due to concerns raised by the CNN documentary 'Blackfish,' 38 Special will be canceling its scheduled March 9th concert at Seaworld. We appreciate the outpouring of support and especially apologize to our Orlando fans. We will try and schedule another performance in your area in the near future."

The park's six-week concert schedule has disappeared from SeaWorld's website. It now simply promises "incredible concerts with top artists in classic rock and country music."
