Drug Dealing Next Door Neighbor
SCENARIO: Alcoholic, 60+ y/o neighbor looses her job after her 3rd DUI a while back. Being who she is, cannot find employment, decides to have her daughter move in. She comes toting 4 children, all from different fathers, and the most recent "baby daddy". Aside from their volume level (car steroes blaring obscene music at all times of the day) they have been pretty low key and respectable people to interact with.
In the last 2 months, the prospectus has changed... The baby daddy, who never worked, and has bragged to me about collecting is now running quite the lucrative street pharmacy. Am I concerned about the drugs themselves, no. My concern lies with the less than desirable individuals now frequenting the neighborhood. Seriously interesting looking characters, usually coming in car loads. Not to mention the little kids in the house while all this is taking place. I'll be bringing home a newborn in 2 months as well. INQUIRY: Keeping in mind I'm not looking for a war here, what would you do? Call the cops, approach him, make it known I know whats going down but don't take action? ASIDE: A number of other neighbors I've spoken with (the ones who don't judge me for being a Porsche owner ![]()

Anonymously call the cops, or go to the station to talk to them. I wouldn't want them parking at my house to come to talk to me about it.

You CANT put up with that, especially with a young family yourself. If theirs a landlord involved, I would find out and inform them. If not, call CPSC for the kids sake. Then the cops. You don't want that element in your face like that.

Total no brainer, call the cops. Only one way for a neighborhood to go when scum like this moves in.

We had almost the same thing happening across the street from a winter home we owned near Tampa. After calling the tip line and speaking directly to an officer who lived a block away nothing happened. When our daughter and son inlaw arrived they asked if they were dealing across the road, 10 min after getting there. We sold the house and moved after hearing gunshots and being told by a neighbour " They have to pay their mortgage somehow." With that remark we relized it wasn,t our kind of neighbourhood.

Just go all "Weeds" on him and tell him you want a cut for being quiet.

Here is how I would handle the situation:
Call the police department and ask to speak to the Narcotics Supervisor. Make it very clear you want to remain anonymous. Provide the police with the suspect's name, description, vehicle information, and address. Tell the police what hours the sales most frequently occur and where the suspect may hide the dope (sometimes they hide it under rocks, inside trash cans, etc.) so it is difficult for the police to locate it. Keep a log of activity going on at their house to show the level of "visitors" carefully noting the time of the visit. If you have the ability to record them, do so and provide it to the police. Ensure they do NOT use your notes or the recording for prosecution because it will be easy to determine where you were standing when recording it and you can be identified. Ensure you get the name of the supervisor and/or investigator you contact and remain in constant contact with them. This will ensure they focus on your problem location. If you have any specific questions, PM me and I'll give you more info, David

So exasperating when neighbors don't have the guts to get involved & help. Another example of our responsibility oriented society. I would inform the police & go up the chain of command if nothing happens. I had a drug dealer who showed up in a piece of rental property I owned years ago. I knocked on the door, went in & introduced myself as the owner. Then I told everyone there (there were about 4 or 5 guys sitting around) I had taken pictures of lots of the cars of people who frequented the place and had them all in an envelope ready to give to the Sherriff's office if the situation continued. I absolutely wouldn't recommend this approach, but they cleared out & I served notice to the tenant living there. Maybe you could photograph some of the traffic & activity & email them along with your safety concerns to the local police.

A relative of mine had a similar problem with sec 8 renters next door dealing drugs. Absolutely no hesitation calling law enforcement. Night vision stuff special phones. They cleaned house. Lots of dirt bags doing time. Now has wonderful neighbors. You should ABSOLUTELY call the law. By the way, can you carry in CT? If I had neighbors like that I would be armed. Stuff spreads if you don't act.

Sit in your front porch with a camera with a large lens, a video camera, a notebook and a shotgun. You should probably have binoculars too. Take lots of notes and pictures in a very conspicuous manner. Every once in a while during their business tell them to soft slightly so you get better lighting for your pictures.
That should do ![]() ![]() ; |

Another vote for contacting your local law enforcement. Let them handle it. They are the professionals at this.

Own your home? Then you are already paying for a solution thru your taxes: the local PD.
They should do something about it. If they don't do anything about it it means they have much bigger fish to fry, ie. a worse area than yours near by, or they are getting paid off, as happened a bit around my nabe many yrs ago. I would doubt that is the case here though. My guess is they already know about it, and have it on 'back burner mode' and will be encouraged by your input. There was had a 'junior pot dealer' in my building, I think my landlord didn't have a clue nor a care as the kid paid his rent in cash. Sounds like a horrible situation if you are a renter you could more easily move. The only comfort, perhaps, is these kind of people sort of implode after a while. Someone really needs to do a re-make of this song replacing "truck driving " with :"drug dealing its really not fair to truck drivers or VN vets but other wise spot on, i am sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb5FuDdbBo0

Your "brother in law, the deputy" needs to stop by for coffee once in a while (during peak business hours) in his patrol car. Introduce everybody in a real friendly way. Its always interesting when they find out that you are from a family of law enforcement, especially if it leaks out that some are undercover. "Oh we haven't seen him before." "Well, he usually works undercover." A friend with a plain Jane late model Crown Vic or Charger also gets attention. Passive aggression.

To add to the previous good advice. DO NOT let them figure out who may have tipped off the police. No police coming to your house for coffee. Seriously; the crazy bastards will shoot you or make you life hell from that point on.
I had the same situation a couple of months ago and did nothing until they had a 24 hour rip roaring party that kept everyone awake all that night so I thought one bad turn deserves another. I visited cops I knew and gave them address decriptions, car regos, times dates, shoes hanging out the windows days they are selling. |

The response of law enforcement may be less than desired.
I had the same situation happen to me in Spokane. The police response was to "gather information" for the next 3 years. By then, I had given up and moved to Seattle, where I researched the neighborhood with the lowest crime rate, and I moved there. __ |
