We used to refer to her as the USS Zippo back when I was in the Navy. She had some bad luck with fires, including one that happened when I was stationed on a tin can in Norfolk. No disrespect intended towards any that were injured or died while serving aboard her.

I can't even imagine how they will scrap it. The amount of asbestos on those old ships is phenomenal.

I remember seeing the miles of duct work wrapped in asbestos and painted with a thick layer of white shiny paint with black stencil marks to ID each line.
I am thinking of flying my plane down to Brownsville and make a low pass over it, anyone up for a plane ride?

why not scrap all of those airplanes sitting out in the desert? that's a lot of aluminum and such.

The Big E is going to suffer the same fate. To much cutting required to get her reactors out.

I think it'd be cool to keep the superstructure intact and put it up somewhere as a mini museum.

Sad but I'm guessing someone is going to make a lot of money off that deal.

I had a tour of the place several years ago - fascinating place. Many of the planes remain in "flyable storage" condition. Either to be reactivated for our own military or sold to foreign air forces.

The costs of "hazardous material abatement" will negate most of the scrap profit. almost every deck is coated with asbestos as are most of the main engineering piping plus the older ships had TONS of PCBs . Better off and more profitable as a museum. Especially so given her history.

I get $150 a ton. Was told prices are going up tomorrow.

So about $9,000,000 as a base. There is also the copper and aluminum and any other recoverable materials (stainless, ect)

Respectfully haz mat removal has evolved over the years. It's cheaper than you think. There is also no hurry on a demo only repairs. No overtime.

Or drained and sunk as a reef.

Ah yes, The "boneyard" at Davis - Monthan Air Base in Tucson, AZ. A very cool tour if you are into aviation.

Having been a military brat in my youth and personally on active duty at a number of Army bases around the world, I have always been sad to go onto facilities that have closed. These places were always home and they will retain that imagine regardless of their current status. Lots of great memories. O Club, class six store, PX, BOQ's, Commissary and all had a slight smell of cosmoline.

I'm sure it exactly the same with a ship.

I just Googled it and you can see all the aircraft from the satellite view. See if this link works:
https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF-8&q=davis+monthan+afb&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Davis%E2%80%93Monthan+Air+Force+Base&cid=0,0,16091582438073486904&ei=cfxwUs3ZOfbIsATV2YGoCg&ved=0CJ4BEPwS

If not, just Google Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and click on the Sat Image - then zoom in.

Yes I agree - very sad about the Forrestal - should be a museum somewhere!
