Yep - a major kitschy tourist trap, but good for a couple of laughs if you've time to kill in Cleveland.

Additional chains also act as stringers to hold the tops of the walls together.
The combined effect is a lower work space with no posts, and the upper space is free from cross beams.

I'm redoing my MCM...one man job, and taking longer than expected, of course. I will include this in the before and after thread. the original tongue and groove redwood siding was past its prime. I salvaged as much as possible, and will be using it in different parts of the house. the exterior walls have been taken down to the studs, new insulation, and then re-sheathed in 3/4" plywood. the "house wrap" is a german product made by Cosella-Doerken for open cladding systems..creating a rain screen. the exterior is now being sheathed in 16 gauge A606 "CorTen" steel with each piece plasma cut by hand, and then attached. I started last fall. should be done later this spring. I spoke with the original architect (an understudy of FLW), before he passed, and got his blessing before I switched to the CorTen. Will post more pictures once progress ramps up here....

As long as we're talkin' FLW, here's one of his homes located right in downtown L.A. The Hollyhock House, completed in 1921, is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

The Hollyhock house is in Barnsdall Park, on the eastern edge of Hollywood right off sunset Blvd about 7 miles from downtown LA. The Ennis House is up in Los Feliz about a mile north from Hollyhock House in the residential section, just less then a 1/4 mile south of the Greek Theater. God only know how much I suffered running in those hills training for X-country back in high school. School is about a mile from there. Lloyd Wright, son, did the Sowden house less then a mile west of there, still in Los Feliz if you are interested.

There are a bunch of interesting homes designed by famous architects within a 5-10 miles rad. from that location. I worked for a designer who lives in a Lloyd Wright house up off Mulholland Dr. This house is interesting. It sits on a few large boulders that acts as foundations but some of the boulders is half way into the house. Cool house, but I looked at the slippage for him but he didn't want to repair it for the fear of losing value due to repairs and no longer original.

The exterior is just about done. Ended up having to make each piece of roof trim, the gutter, downspout.... hand welded and fit to finish. The interesting thing about this house, is that nothing is built at a 90 degree angle. Everything (By quirky design) is either 105 degrees or 95 degrees. I destroyed my landscaping by driving the all-terrain lift around the property, so that is all going to have to be redone next. Doing a project on this scale, completely by myself...is something I will NEVER do again. All in all, I ended up reframing about 20% of the house. The back of the house is a 2nd story deck, which was replaced, in order to complete the back half...since it overlooks a ravine/creek and I had no way of getting the lift back there. Have I mentioned that I'll never do a project like this again? Ha.

These were posted in the MID CENTURY MODERN Facebook group. I highly recommend it to those of you who love this architecture.

We bought an architecturally designed MCM that has had just one owner since 1956! For us, this was a dream as, aside from some funny 1970s wallpaper, the house was intact, right down to the 1956 Thermador wall oven and Nutone intercom system. We set about putting it back to its 1956 glory by pulling up the carpet in the bathrooms (ewwww!) and replacing the original carpet with new (the same) and stripping metre after metre of wallpaper, replacing all of the damaged Formica etc. etc. We were determined to honour the home and not "wreck-o-vate." So, after this exhausting and rewarding work, we had accomplished what we had set out to do, we had friend over who looked around and said, "Wow! This is an amazing place! It will be really nice when it is renovated!"

That reminds me of Chemosphere by Lauther on Torreyson Drive right off Mulholland, right where you used to raise hell. I did all the interior on that during the last renovation when I was young, ambitious, and dumb. Wish I took pictures then.

We're thinking of building a small cabin behind my mom's house in east Texas since my wife has a hard time staying in my mom's house with cats. She found this cool Finish design but I have a feeling the cost per sqft for something barely over 500 sqft would be silly.
