Matt, while we certainly possess more "humane" ways in which to dispatch game than the bow, the manner in which it kills is stall far more humane than the myriad of means through which they die naturally. Nature is cruel - man only slightly less so. That, and anyone who has killed enough game with modern firearms will readily acknowledge they don't always drop to the shot. As a matter of that, it is the rare exception that they do. Animals don't give up their lives that easily. They suffer plenty even when hit with the most modern of rounds. Let's not kid anyone.

Without game management (hunting) the deer population in a given area will expand to a point that it outstrips available food sources. The result is starvation of large portions of the population. There are more white tail deer in North America now than in the 1930s and it's due to proper game management and hunting.

Deer hunting in the Midwest is a necessity. Have to thin the herd. Deer are overpopulated.

They can be hunted and used as sustenance or left to rot along the side of the highway.

Rarely does a day go by that I don't see a mangled carcus along the medium or on the side of the road.

Bow hunting is getting more popular as hunting is now permitted in some suburbs - rifles are not allowed due to the distance a bullet can travel.

Seahawk 11-06-2013 11:37 AM

I get bow season, I really do. But I only let one guy hunt my farm with a bow. He was the only one that said yes when I asked if he was willing to go to my range and show me he could handle his bow. Even my son hasn't qualified to hunt here with a bow...he hasn't shown the will do it.

Fifteen years later he still hunts here, sets up the stands every year and coordinates friends and family who want to hunt.

I qual everyone who hunts here, Black Powder, shotgun, etc. I watch how they treat their weapon, approach shooting and then accuracy. I know that sounds harsh but I don't charge anyone and this is my farm.

Everything dies, that's a fact. I just want it done well and they need to prove it. Bow hunting is a skill, more so than BP or slugs.

there is MORE BIG GAME NOW..................than before columbus landed here, due to PROPER wildlife mgmt.

example here in airey-zoney(AZ).

when "whitey" came here way back when(think bill williams mtn man) all BIG 10 game species had HUGE POPULATIONS, kept in check by APEX predators(mtn kittys bobkittys wolfeys honey badgers, indians, grizzy bears, black bears). once "whitey" arrived, everythang was SHOT TO POO!

turkeys-gone
big horn sheepys-gone
buffalo-gone
elk-gone
wolfeys-gone
grizzy bears-gone(1920's last one shot in blue primative range)
calif. condors-gone
beavers-gone-"wally walapi" i think bagged the last one.
antelopezzzz'zz-damn near wiped out

the ONLY predators to survive in any viable numbers to procreate............mr mtn kitty and mr bobby kitty. cuz theys sneaky. but if you were a mtn kitty in the GILA forests of new messiko...........BEN LILLY would have "CAPPED YO AZZ" in a heartbeat as thats ALL HE DID HIS ENTIRE LIFE IN THERE! and the ranchers paid him handsomely for his services.

850 cow elk tags for early hunt here this year. and i GOT ONE! w/my 45/70!

see I'M A WILDLIFE MANAGER! i think that should go on my resume. "ODDJOB UNOS WILDLIFE MGMT SERVICES!"

therefore YOU WON'T HIT a COW ELK hauling azz at night along I-40 here in ARIZONA!

Please, I am not against hunting. I just think if people took their time a little more and waited for a better shot ( as opposed to any shot) it would be better all around. Jeff, I can sit here and tell you that yes, indeed my deer have dropped within 20 feet of being shot, that is how sure I am of every shot I make. These fools that take 2-3 shots or more to kill the deer they are hunting are not sportsmen.

Look, we all have our own opinions, and this is a place to share them. I only stated mine. Go hunt anyway that you like.

How about because arrogant humans have offed 99.9% of their predators??

Na that couldn't be it

This just happened yesterday in my city.

Family cat shot with arrow through chest in Norwich, CT - Boston animal advocacy | Examiner.com

Norwich police are searching for the individual that shot a family cat with an arrow. On November 4, 2013 a 1 to 2 year old male cat, who goes by the name Elliot, was brought in to All Friends Animal Hospital after he had been found with an arrow through his body. Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom found the cat and contacted the police.

Elliot, who has a loving, elderly, disabled owner, was shot with a fiberglass arrow through his chest. Veterinarian Kathleen Tangari suspects the arrow was in him for two days before he was found. Luckily for Elliot, the arrow missed all major organs and arteries, and he should make a good recovery. Though he may see some long-term nerve damage to his front legs.

Officials believe this was intentional.

Mayor Nystrom offered to help with medical expenses as the elderly owner could not afford the hospital bills. All Friends Animal Hospital relied on donations from an “angel fund.”

Elliot is now recovering, having spent a night at Dr. Tangari's and is expected to go home soon.

The cat was shot in the area of Gates Rd. in Norwich. Anyone with any information is urged to call Norwich Animal Control at 860-886-5747.

This is the reason. So modern game management, it's modern cleaning up the mess that we created management.

I'm not a hunter, but I eat meat. I've got friends and relatives that hunt for food. I am ok with hunting to eat what you hunt. I'm not a fan of folks that hunt just to get the critter stuffed. If I had to kill something to eat it, I would. Fortunately, I don't have to.

There's a difference between a hunter and a nutjob/dumbass.

Porchdog 11-06-2013 02:54 PM

That cat was shot with a cross bow bolt with a field tip. It's pretty unlikely that was used by a hunter. There are always idiots - some of them torture or kill pet cats.

Like it or not - people are taking up most of the habitat that predators would need. Whitetail deer populations explode in suburbia. In much of suburbia, bowhunting is the only viable hunting option.

Somebody had a bad or unlucky shot. It happens. Worse things happen to deer, with or without human involvement.

People who don't understand the order of predator and prey just don't understand life.

I know fellas. I should have put the whole post in green.

Porshdog, you have to have predators for that balance.

One of the biggest wildlife problems the US has to be is the reintroduction of Wolves.

Just Google people living with wolves. Pets and live stock just don't stand a chance. :(
