I love me some dogs, too. I have three. They are laying on my feet as I type.

But feral cats and dogs aren't pets. I treat them differently and I have shot them. I had a Jack Russel literally skinned in front of me by a pack of feral dogs.

Any feral cat that moves in gets shot. Dogs I judge by their demeanor first.

In whatever suburb you live in I know that is all barbaric.

Same as it ever was.

However, I have no idea why bow hunting is legal.

Safer for the hunters.

During rifle season, there are lots of yayhoos running around the woods after drinking the night before, and a small minority of them will shoot at "movement" which could be another hunter several hundred yards away.

Bow hunters won't usually shoot any farther than 20-30 yards. 50 yards is a very long shot with a bow.

Hard to mistake a hunter for a deer at 30 yards.

And there you have it. Thanks, Paul.

I'm certainly no liberal and I'd fully support a ban of such a sort. In fact I think so-called "sport hunting" ought to be completely outlawed. It's sick, primitive and barbaric. If someone is hunting to survive that's one thing - unfortunate but it probably does happen and I sincerely doubt that's the case here.

I'd like to think we as a society have evolved past whoopin' it up over the "sport" of blowing some defenseless animal's brains out for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I've got news for the redneck/poop-kickers out there - it isn't a sport at all. Give the animals a way to shoot back - THEN you've got yourselves a "sport".

I don't hunt, but have no problem with others shooting bambi. Too many deer, there are hundreds in our neighborhood. I've had $10k plus of auto damage over the years, and a business acquaintance was killed in a car/deer accident.

Deer : Deer–vehicle collisions lead to about 200 human deaths and $1.1 billion in property damage every year

And two of my 3 children have had lyme disease (from deer tick)

Thin the herds.

Around here we judge distance in dead deer. "Yeah Jim lives about 3 does and a dead buck from here"...they are everywhere.

They kill anything and everything smaller than themselves. Beyond their wanton killing, they are also destructive nuisances when allowed to run loose. If cat owners do not want their cats shot, they need to be responsible owners and leave them indoors. Otherwise they are fair game.

I would call this one hell of a lucky kitty - let's hope its second chance with a new owner will find it cared for a bit more responsibly. If not, I hope the next guy is a better shot.

And no, this has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. This is pest control, pure and simple. An entirely different matter.

Domestic cats mostly kill introduced species. Not indigenous wildlife. Sure they do get some of them but they mostly kill mice and introduced birds.

I didn't know they could tell the difference.

Shirley, you can back up such a claim with some data - a study or two that would verify this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/30/science/that-cuddly-kitty-of-yours-is-a-killer.html?_r=0

From the NY Times article linked above (emphasis added):

In a report that scaled up local surveys and pilot studies to national dimensions, scientists from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Fish and Wildlife Service estimated that domestic cats in the United States — both the pet Fluffies that spend part of the day outdoors and the unnamed strays and ferals that never leave it — kill a median of 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals a year, most of them native mammals like shrews, chipmunks and voles rather than introduced pests like the Norway rat.

There's a reason some cultures eat cat.

The physics of that arrow flight had to be pretty interesting to have resulted in it stopping just beyond the exit wound.

A knowledgeable poster identified the arrow as a custom made one with an aluminum shaft and special fletching typically used on a re-curved or long bow. The broad head is an artisan one. With such a device the ballistics are estimated at 200 fps which is slow as compared to a crossbow or a compound bow.
