Oradour-sur-Glane France Destroyed in WW2

I guess I sat at the computer to long looking at WW2 videos. Oradour-sur-Glane France has lain untouched since June 10 1944 When the Germans wiped out the entire town. We were in France last year and missed this. Next time.....

"The original population was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built after the war on a nearby site but on the orders of the then French president, Charles de Gaulle, the original has been maintained as a permanent memorial and museum."

I visited this place but I didn't find it very interesting, most part of the village is a half destroyed.

It's more a place kept in remembrance of past and people who died here in horrible conditions than a place important to go, I rather advise you Caen memorial for exemple

The German method of making war was efficient, but soulless......devoid of morality.
I'm of German decent and it shows......but damn.
Not just the Nazis either as WWI showed.

Very interesting. The Germans' Scorched Earth Policy was pretty brutal.

+1

Mémorial de Caen was truly well worth the voyage for me.

Arguably one of the best WW2 war museums in Europe.

I find the Oradour-sur-Glane France (memorial site) very powerful. The broken pieces of ordinary lives waiting in an empty space strikes an emotional chord for me.

There obviously were many Germans caught up in the euphoria of the so called master race before and during WW2. This village was the result. I find it horrendous, abhorrent and several other adjectives to describe it. The Germans I meet now such as 40 year olds obviously disclaim responsibility as they were not there. Thirty years ago the occasional German I worked with still thought that Hitler was a great man. His father was a tank commander in WW2.

Thanks to everybody that did service in WW2. If you Father/Mother served in WW2 please thank them personally. They are heroes. Lest we forget!

But to back to Oradour-sur-Glane, a few weeks ago Hollande and Gauck met over there to support reconciliation, it was a celebration
