The Jaguar XJ series cars

So now that the Jaguar XJ line has moved away from the classic lines will any of the line from the 70's through late 2000's become collectors items? I have always loved the style of these cars especially the XJC's.

I lovey X 350 chassis VDP. When I trade in, it'll be for an XK or an X350 XJR/Super V8. ...I could get a well sorted CPO XF for the same cash, but I love the real Jaguar lines

My X308 XJR was a great car. The X350 is nice but the air suspension is a nightmare.

Parts are expensive for the air suspension bUT the ride is incredible and swapping the air suspension parts is quite easy and simple...

My XJR beater car. Just did all new timing chains and associated bits, was 12 hours of my labor and $800 in parts.

every time a friend of mine buys a Jag, I send them a case of oil. I have been stalking XJS's myself.I see them starting to go up in price as well. I had an XJ6 for a while in 85. It was the nicest riding nightmare you have ever been in...

Just looked up early 2000s XJRs. Wow that's a ton of car for next to nothing. Great lines.

There are something like six revisions you have to make to the timing chain system between 2000 and 2004 and they love to eat head gaskets.

Yeah, the 4.0 liter used 2000-2003 had serious timing chain issues, including plastic tensioners....the 4.2 from 04-09 is pretty stout though.

Bought my wife a beautiful '89 XJS conv. for a major birthday. Owned it for the last 9 months, been in the shop (still is) for the last 7 months. Electrical issues. All show & no go. If anyone here has expertise with the electrical side (Marelli) please pm me.

By the late '90s they were really benefiting from Ford ownership. My 2000 XJR was high miles and very reliable. They are pretty easy to find with the timing chain guide update done, so long as you change the ATF oil and filter they are really solid cars. The DOHC V8 and supercharger makes some fantastic noises, and they are FAST. Super comfy too but without being soggy, awesome road trip car.

Note that the straight six XJR didn't have the timing chain issues. They are very solid but I find the styling and interior to look a bit more dated than the later V8 models.

They have a different sort of timing chain failure on the AJ16's. My upper chain tensioner had died twice, and the ramp wear through and start to fall off. Granted this is post 100k type stuff but still a problem.

You really, really, have to keep up on stuff.

Welled out hole in the block from the broken damper: (fun repair)

When they were racing the XJC's, getting the oil consumption below the fuel consumption was a major milestone in the development.

Any issues with the '04-'07 X350 series cars? Thinkng about adding one to the fleet. It sounds like the X308 cars have a number of issues and I don't like the styling of the X358 version.

I think all of the X350 cars had the problematic air suspension. Do some research on the topic, I have a high threshold for automotive pain and it was enough to scare me away. I would (and did) take an X308 over an X350, as most by now have either had chain guide failure or the update done. Post update they have no timing chain issues.
