what is it about a Porsche ?

About a week or so ago I posted that I was thinking about getting rid of one/both of my 1975 914 GT clone and 1983 911SC coupe. Since then I have been online shopping like crazy. Looked at BMW Z3, Audi TT, Mini Cooper , Merceded SLK and Mazda Miata. All nice cars but for a newer car I'm still drawn to a Boxster/S. Even with IMS/RMS potential issues I am drawn to these cars. What is it about a Porsche ? Is it truly there is no substitute ? Is it a disease ?

I agree.... waiting for the Panamera prices to come down so I can have a wicked fast, quiet, comfortable mileage runner

It's the rear engine. Yeh, that's what it is. Yeh.

And there is a substitute... a hopped up VW.

I'm going to say disease. One that we've all caught.

I'm sorry but there is no known cure; your only choice is to manage it the best you can. I suggest the "Affordable 9X6" threads.

I was intentionally infected by my parents - they brought me home from the hospital when I was born in my 356

It's that time of (every other) year again where I have to get my 930 smogged. As Kalifornia is more strict than any other state, I was complaining to my wife that we should move to another state (no 25-year grandfather clause, can't modify with aftermarket parts, etc). She suggested I sell the car. What?!? Yeah, and take the proceeds, add a little extra money, and buy a more modern 911 (GT3?) where passing smog isn't likely to be an issue. She knew it would have to be another 911.

I passed smog, so leave me be for another 2 years.

It's the air cooled flat four that makes them special. Yes, OK, an air cooled flat six is still pretty nice, but when you start putting water in them the Porsche magic goes away.

Resistance is futile....

Sorry to pull out my star trek geekery.

Funny, I thought getting my 911 would suffice so I could gather my cars on my list (lotus, alfa....) I find myself scanning ebay and craigslist for an early boxster.

Couldn't you get a Mail Boxes Etc address in NV and register it there? I know some people who do something similar in NJ for Insurance reasons (mostly New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate NY.

Eventually, that might not be a bad idea. One Pelican will sign up for the PO box, and we'll have 300 cars registered to that "address."

It's not that I'm anti-environment. I understand the reason and benefit of having smog test compliance. But if a car passes the sniffer test (isn't that what's important?) shouldn't it be OK? What's with this ridiculous visual test in CA, where everything has to look stock as well?

Its the sound...or smell...or the feel...

My 16 year son was hot on Corvette. Then I got a measly 996 C2 and the tune has totally changed. LOL. He's a good kid and like his Dad knows quality when he sees, smells, and drives it

Lots of work ahead but he's charged to do it with me. Another win.

Me too… I love that car… awkward looking rear and everything. Of course I also drive a Ridgeline...

"MEASLEY?" ..... A vette or 996 for a 16 year old even if I could afford it ... it wouldn't happen.

The first car I got my daughter was a Nissan Xtrail(like a small pathfinder). There is no way she is getting into a low sporty car with all the half ton trucks around especially in the winter.

My wife is having more trouble getting in and out of the Boxster than I do. She being 65 and me 67 she is trying to orchestrate something more benign in the future such as a Lexus car. I said I would buy her one and that shuts her up.

You have to stay in shape and do your balance exercises to successfully enter and exit a Porsche when the ground is slippery.

I used to think that a 993 was cool. But the Box is cooler coz it's cheap to buy, cheaper to maintain than a 911, has heated seats, good air cond. I can park it anywhere and not worry about it(I would be more concerned if it was a 993) and if it gets stolen, then I can replace easily. What's not to love?

Just don't mention the white stuff!

I've never seen phone-dial looking wheels on a Boxster before.

When did they do this?
