Oh, wait . . .
Spot on man! It won't be long before the next generation 911 is built on a shared VW platform.

I wish they would hurry up and build a good 1/2 ton pickup truck.

This is what happens when your engineers create the hands down best vehicle in the segment out of the box. You guys rag on Porsche for being brilliant; just so happens they are as good at engineering SUV's as much as they are sports cars.

There's a bit of an untold story in the world of Automotive engineering- the people who work on the minivans and the soccer mom SUV's- typically those people are what we call the 'B-team'. If they were the A-team, they'd be working on the Corvettes an the 911's of the world. Not a lot of people get to the top of their peers in a career field and say "Hey, I want to be the lead powertrain engineer for that new Honda CRV." No, they're off doing the NSX. You guys get my point.

The Cayenne is (was) what happens when you grab the A-team and force them to work on an SUV. It sells like hotcakes.

I suspect BMW is in roughly the same situation. While leaning a bit less on the sport side of things than Porsche, they know how to make an SUV that doesn't suck. Having driven most of the small SUVs and wagons, the only thing that is comparable in performance (for under $40K) is Subie WRX, and in that battle the interior on the BMW wins handily.

There is no way I could live with just a 911 given my lifestyle and work - need the space of a hatch. So then it comes down to whether I have two vehicles (one utility, one fun), or find one that does it all. For now, the latter strategy is paying off.
