The "Meet On The Street" filter

A number of threads here have started in response to "celebrity" actions or statements. I am more than a little concerned about the celebrity culture in our society and wonder:

If you met one of these people on the street, not knowing who they were or what they did for a living, would you even give a darn about what they said? (Ignoring for a moment some of these people have attention-getting racks).

Seriously. Why do we even turn on the TV some days? If some actor/singer/athlete does something, does it give it any more weight than the same action from the guy next door?

There are role models and heroes in our own neighborhoods.
If someone we don't know has had five minutes of fame why do we eat up their stuff?

Wondering
Les

agree, I don't really consider what an actor or athlete says concerning an issue over anyone elses opinion...in fact many times I would imagine that most are ill informed.

The only way I view athletes as "role models" is as talking points with my son. He's 6, but says he's determined to be a fighter (think UFC). He's been in Tae Kwon Do for about a year, and has some obvious natural talent (for which I claim genetically comes from me--whether I'm right or not can be debated, lol). I often talk to him about the hard work, sacrifice, etc. that a professional athlete in any sport has to put in to get to that level.

But for what they do or say OFF the playing field of their choosing, I couldn't give a damn.

I wouldn't EVER look to actors/musicians as role models--most of them are whacked in the brain. My oldest daughter (13) used to LOVE Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus). When she started going the druggy/slut route, I figured it would be wise to have a talk with my daughter about this behavior. She promptly told me that she likes the music and the show, but she thinks Miley isn't a very good person. It amazes me the wisdom that child possesses..

I work with a lot of famous people. Most are well adjusted (at least seem that way), nice and down to earth when away from the cameras and "their public". A film set is almost like a sanctuary for them, they can be themselves without having to worry about being in tomorrow's tabloids. Granted, there are some publicity whores in the mix, but the majority just want to lead a somewhat normal life.

I remember meeting with Jennifer Anniston a few days after the whole "Brangelina" thing went down. We were location scouting and the paparazzi were relentless, I'd never experienced anything that severe. Decoy vehicles, lookalikes, everything was used to throw them off her trail.

Years ago I worked with Lorenzo Music (Carlton The Doorman, Garfield and voice over on a buttload of commercials). He told me he had the best job in the World, making a ton of money and could walk down the street and nobody would recognize him unless he opened up his mouth.

I prefer my anonymity, the celeb life is not for me. It pays well but they can have it.

One of the ladies I used to work with was a typical human and went on dates while she was still in high school. Her father was a local radio announcer and did thousands of commercials in the local market. Everyone knew his voice. She said she was bieng a typical girl on a date and in a lip lock with a boy in his car and listining to the radio. A commercial with her dad's voice started and she was suddenly daddy's little girl again and made the boy take her home. She said her dad's voice ruined the mood for her.

I have work on a few big (and small) name Hollywood mucky mucks. Most just want to same things we do, a little quiet time with their families and be out of the limelight and away from the crazy people. There are the few that look at everything as a business deal and treat everyone like crap and have no respect for anyone outside their social and business circle. No different then most people.

I was chatting with a famous signer from the 70s and she was about to go to IKEA. She has to put up her hair and wear a hat so people would not recognize her. Now, that's gotta a btich to have to do all that just to go out.

Modern man has replaced heros with celebrities. The former are admired for their actions. Celebrities are famous for being celebrities...
Society no longer admires integrity, bravery, selflessness. Marilyn Monroe put it this way: "Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul."

YES, if it's a woman who strips.

If celebrities are mainly actors who know very little of real or political life, what does it say about your view points if they happen to agree with them?

I often wonder if actors or actresses of the old days point of view is vastly different from today's? Are they the same BS but from different times or does it carry a little more weight compared to today's instant info from our very finger tips?
