Shame on the newspapers....
I am by no means a tree hugger, but the amount of print ads in todays newspaper is appalling. What a waste. Hopefully some of the content is on recycled material. I hope folks recycle. I've already cut my subscription to 3 days/week. May just have to cancel. Newspapers are so 1970's :--)

Now in 993 land ...

Many trees grown for paper are a renewable resource. They may not even have been planted without the paper need. I have personally planted and cut such trees - and replanted them.
That said, print papers are going to go away sooner than later. They must already have been reduced by 80%. I used to walk the neighborhood on weekend and every driveway or doorway had a paper in it. Now it is a rare occurrence. Maybe it is different in other areas, but in LA and the Bay Area, print is done. G |

Shame on the newspapers....
My paper was 5 inches thick of ads only. The ads went straight to my recycle bin without a glance.

Most newsprint has a percentage of recycled fiber.

I suspect the price that people pay for the paper does not pay for the paper to be printed these days. Back in the day when there were many MANY subscribers it may have, but these days, they have to sell ads to pay for the paper. At least, that's my guess.

Just another of those non-obvious things where the course that doesn't seem "green" is actually better - like the wind turbines around here where the electricity production will take 35 years to offset the carbon footprint of manufacturing them - but they have a projected service life of 10 years... People still buy newspapers? I used to buy a sunday paper every now and again. Haven't done that for well over a decade now...

California law mandates the use of a specified amount of recycled-content newsprint (RCN) by printers and publishers located in California, and CalRecycle implements the program to encourage and track the use of RCN (Public Resources Code Section 42750 et al). For the program:
RCN is defined as newsprint comprised of at least 40 percent postconsumer waste paper fiber by weight. At least 50 percent of the newsprint used for printing and publishing by each commercial printer and publisher (consumers) in California must be RCN. |

They mail me paper ads several times a week. This is the one day I year I might glance at them before growing them away.

Absolutely.... browsing the daily paper while drinking a couple of cups of coffee is a great way to start the day. Read the comics, state and local sections to see what is going on with the local politicians (someone has to keep an eye on them), peruse the sports page to see how the local high schools are doing.. scan the editorial page and may read a bit of it. You can subscribe to most local daily papers and read via the internet but it's just not the same...
Unfortunately, it appears my generation may be the last one to actually read printed newspapers and I think it is a great loss to our society. and yes, all our newspapers are recycled.

I'm with you, Jack. I like to read the paper while relaxing with a cocktail after work. I can get local news which I can't find online. I'm strapped to a computer all day, and this is a nice diversion.
And I recycle all of our papers as well. In fact, since we don't have curbside recycling here yet, I drive them to the township facility. And it's kind of personal to me, as I lost my job of 13 yrs. due to the downturn in the newspaper biz. The company I worked for made post-press capital equipment for the industry, and our divsion was closed down. I don't mind supporting the remaining workers in the field.

So I'm clear... an industry that sells paper ads should be ashamed that they sold a lot of paper ads?

When we dropped our land line a couple of years ago, "they" stopped delivering them to our house. We were getting 2 or 3 different books at one point before they stopped and they all went straight to recycle.

As a retired newspaper exec, I will tell you that Thanksgiving is always the biggest paper all year. One of those traditions in the industry that the E media hasn't been able to kill yet. You should support print media. they are the last of the unbiased mass media.
