Just put the watch part on the handle bar in front of you.

Thanks guys. The Nike one looks simple and small, I like it. I don't mine having a quick peek of my wrist during a climb or hauling while sucking wheel. I would only have a look if my heart is beating out of my chest.

Anyone use this one?

Scosche Rhythm+ Heart Rate Monitor Armband - Optical Heart Rate Armband Monitor with Dual Band Radio ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart -

Nope.

I've got an Apple watch that does a good job of monitoring, and can even alarm if it detects something weird. Apparently people have had their watches discover problems that they didn't know about.

I've also used the Wahoo Tickr chest strap. I see they also now have an optical arm band. I've used the chest strap while running and cycling and also had the chest strap connected to a Wahoo bike computer with two other sensors (speed and cadence). I've had good luck with all of my Wahoo stuff.

My methods have always been riding lots of miles and chase the guys in front of me until I puke and do it again. At 47, I can't do that siht any moe. I'll break down and get a heart rate monitor to see if there are any benefits. A bunch of my geek friends have those things the size of a phone sitting atop their handle bars that record and show everything from a pee stop to a 9000' climb. I have no need and hate having any of that stuff on my bar. No speedo, nothing. Anyone use those that goes on your wrist like a watch. Runners, what do you use? I am thinking of a watch and HRM, nothing more. Any thoughts?

Garmin 35, Its a wrist watch, HRM, GPS, tracks elevation, can be used for running(indoor and out) walking & biking and broadcasts to a bar mounted Garmin if you choose, I use a 520 but there are several other bigger and some smaller versions too.

I guess I missed this thread 7 years ago but that's about when I started using a heart rate monitor while riding. I should have started earlier. It's a great indicator of your conditioning and great way to determine how much effort you can put out for a given ride time. For instance, I can average a 130 rate all day long, average 140 for only a few hours, average 150 for about an hour, and 160 for only a few minutes. If I try to hold too high a heart rate during a long ride, I'll bonk for sure. If I'm not feeling great but ride anyway, I know I can keep my heart rate down and not have problems.

If I'm on a group ride and it turns into the world championships, I know when it's time to back off and let the kids go when I reach my max heart rate, 167 (220-my age).

I don't have the times and limits determined as specifically as you, but that sounds about right for me as well. I'm about 3-4 years younger than you, and I also max out around the same place (167-175). Once I get up there I know I need to back off.

My wife has a heart like a hummingbird considering that she's older than both of us by several years, and when she's running, her HR can get into the 180-190 range.
