Recall on dad's deer rifle. Yikes!

About 15 years ago, my dad inherited a Winchester model 100 .308. These are semi-auto rifles made in the early 1960's. He has hunted with it for about the last 10, and we have both shot deer with it. Its a fantastic gun for hunting deer in the northern forest. Large (yet light) stock with beautiful oak themed carving, great for gloved hands. Short barrel moves around easily in a blind. Action seems impervious to weather. Zero malfunctions.

I recall my dad mentioning something along the lines of, "Someone told me there were problems with them, but it works fine for me", when he got the gun. He left the gun with me for the winter, to be refinished and have a new scope put on. So I looked into the 'problems'. Not good! The firing pin can break off, and lodge in the extended position. The gun goes full auto if you're lucky, and blasts off all 5 round in the magazine. If you're unlucky, one of the cartridges ruptures in your face, or the action blows up in your face.

We never had an issue with it, but I confirmed with Winchester that it has not been repaired. The former owners of Winchester still cover the repair, so I'm getting a replacement pin. Sure wishing dad had been a bit more diligent about following up if he knew there was an issue!

Not ours, but similar:

Good catch!

While I suppose I could goog it (on listening in on a telcon), is anyone aware of a clearing house for gun related safety recalls?

I have a bunch of old guns I should probably run a screen on.

Thanks, HD.

Now if Remington were just as diligent I would have more respect for them. How are you refinishing it? PM me if you have ANY questions. PUT THE SANDPAPER DOWN!

Can you used that in Ohio? I didn't think so..

I picked up a Winchester 100 about 12 years ago knowing about the recall. I shipped the 100 to Winchester and they fixed it and paid for the shipping to a gun dealer. It shoots great, I took 2 deer with 1 bullet 6 years ago.

Closest I could find, interesting in that the Model 100 isn't listed...probably too old of a recall: Firearms Recalls - Ammunition Recalls - The Gun Guy®

How am I refinishing it? I'm putting it in a box and sending it to you.

Expect an e-mail with photos this PM.

Can't use rifles in OH or southern Michigan. But we hunt in the Michigan UP.

As an ardent fan of Sig Sauer firearms, I would like to point out that they are nowhere to be found on that list.

You could come to PA as well. Probably closer too. I'm about 3 hours from you. They have been banging away all day out there. I live close to a big woods so they sound like they are in my yard. My nephew bagged a 9 point yesterday.
