Porsche-engined motorcycle | Bike EXIF

Quote:
Porsche-engined Yamaha SR, built by Kingston Custom. The top half of the motor comes from a 911 Turbo.
A curious machine indeed.

Has anyone stuck a V-Rod engine in a different frame?

HD really missed the boat not offering that engine in deisgnes other than the Vrod. It would have made a great sport touring bike, adventure bike, or even just a standard bike. Would have opened their doors to a whole new market.

Absolutely.

They showed a glimmer of hope with the "Street Rod", a V-Rod with foot pegs in the normal position and the front end rake pulled in from that ridiculous 40 degrees to about 26-28 degrees. I remember one of the bike mags exclaiming "finally - a Harley for the rest of us". Lots of buzz over the the thing for a short while, then it just went away.

HD just didn't support it. What could have been a decent sport-tourer had no saddlebags available, and only the most cursory of windshields. I remember one sitting at Eastside HD for months. I was going to go in and give them an embarrassingly low-ball offer, but then I wondered what I would do with a 200 pound overweight "sport" bike.

That V-Rod was/is a one-dimension bike, for sure.

Um, so I guess the top frame rail/tube is the gas tank?

From the looks of it, I bet that's more than enough...

The first couple times I saw a V-Rod on the street I'd ask the owner if the hardware on the bike was in SAE sizes or metric. Most had no idea what I was talking about, let alone any sort of answer. I don't think HD's target demographic for the V-Rod cared one whit about the Stuttgart engineering. (I think it was Chocoholic that finally answered my question, as I couldn't get any owner I came across here in LA to do so.)

That's an interesting concept. I had an SR500 once. I tricked it out a little, with a cam and exhaust, but it was pretty heavy and underpowered, with a pretty weak frame and suspension.

I had fun with it, though. Wonder if I can find a picture of it?

That article is pretty light on information, that's for sure. We learn it has a Porsche piston

I owned a V-rod for less than a year...an impulse buy. Never quite figured out its real purpose. That engine, or a larger displacement version, really should have found its way into their touring bike lineup. Interesting that they're now water cooling their air cooled engines instead...and having issues with pressure leaks. Must be a reason they just didn't go with this proven and more powerful engine. Probably for fashion reasons. Doesn't sound the same (no potato-potato sound, etc).

Have had bike exif bookmarked for years. Really cool site with an incredible flow of stunning and creative bikes of all origins. Enjoy!

Boy, these sure have carved out a niche in the motorcycling world. Very sought after bike these days. Well up on my "someday" list is a properly cafe'd SR500. Either that or the Honda version of it - didn't they call it the "Ascot" (after the mile track there) or something? I think it had their 500cc RFV motor in it, so kind of like my XR650L.

I'm actually surprised no one builds a proper big thumper, other than Royal Enfield. I just have to think guys would be lining up for a big, simple, cheap, road going thumper with kind of a cafe attitude.

Yeah... I thought I had seen photos of it.
But do you go around telling people that you have Porsche Suspension?

The bike is a rat, with a Yamaha engine that happens to have a Porsche piston, cylinder, and modified cam box jammed on top. It no more has a Porsche engine than that truck has Porsche suspension.

Interesting? Sure.
Porsche engine? no.

it is a show bike of a dragbike custom
so only needs 1/4 mile worth of fuel
and comfort is not a design requirement

practical is not a consideration

btw lots of SR yamaha's in 250 350 500 ect on that site

and I am sick of seeing the no talent hog kit bike choppers [like the tv show]
and like the semi rat rod cafe style

most of a porsche motor grafted on a yamaha lower bits
far more innovative the your avg hog chopper
or a truck with wheel adapters
so lets drop the truck and v-rod BS
