Got a new toy

First flight:

Much easier to control than an RC helicopter, but still requires plenty of practice. I've just had a few minutes with it, before it started snowing like crazy. Planning on more time tomorrow and hoping that my skillz improve dramatically. Long ways to go

2nd attempt is a little better. Hoping to make lots of progress today. These things aren't easy to learn for an old guy! Sidney, yeah, I'm hoping to get some boarding and surfing action, as well as motorcycle racing with it.

here's some great video work a good buddy in NZ has done, really using the Hero3 features, using dampening camera mounts, and even FPV, first person view with the pilot flying via goggles with his DJI first generation, they have just recently released a Gen II, so the Gen I's went on sale.

Gen II's aren't cheap though, at $1200 with a built in camera so no gopro is needed. Stunning GPS performance and features like Altitude hold, and auto home.

Gen I's are cheap in comparison, $479.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1009625-REG/dji_cp_pt_000002_dji_phantom_quadcopter_with.html

with good flying skills, camera work/angles, and some time on software editing, it's amazing what a simple amateur can produce.

Making some more progress. Getting to the point where I can control the thing and keep it in sight, but still struggling with knowing which way the camera is pointing when its off in the distance.

Dave, thanks for those links. I'm gonna check into the post-production stabilizing software.

Music is totally ridiculous. Apologies...

flying filming tips...........always keep the copter moving forward in motion, helps as a reference.

I've installed red electrical tape, taped on cut-up red plastic Solo cups nose cone, for more positional reference of what's "front".

I'm Looking at a new 808 style keychain camera (model #16 on ebay), new models are only $50 and shoot full 720p or 1080, this was a older cheapo $15 cam that only shot in 480x640, but in a way I like the grainy old school look.

the DJI's are just a little out of my price range to totally lose a $500 copter and $300 go pro, I'll write off $50 for copter/cam no biggee, but $800 gone gets the wife's attention.

My main quick to use video editing software is just Free Windows Live Movie Maker, when I want to get fancy I use Sony Vegas Movie Maker $99, and I could never teach myself or learn Adobe Premiere. Sony Vegas is a full feature software.

See my cheapo $35 quad copter with red tape keg cup mods here in the first seconds of the video:

Note the copter on the far left, a Red Solo cup "canopy" was my camera mount, with the keychain fob cam taped on top.

"How to lose a quad copter for 2 months in a tree"

grins.

Awesome ! I've got to have one of those, where did you find it ?

Just add go pro ?

Motion you had great control right away !

Snow looks good in RL that probably covered the rocks up well up on the hill.

It shaping up to be a good snow year in MT.

It looks like you have some mean trees, they are behind fences. Do they attack the dogs that approach and sniff?

Cool toy.

You can get them on Amazon or BH Photo. Yeah, just add a GoPro. I have a Hero 3 Black. Gonna try some 120fps slow mo tomorrow, and some 4K cinema to see how that looks.

Snow is great! I was up on the mountain today shredding on my board. I think there were 50 other people on the mountain! How is the largest ski mountain in the U.S. looking this year?
