Winter clothing catalogs
This time of year we're all inundated with clothing catalogs in the mail carrying winter gear. Some of these catalogs, particularly the more outdoorsy/sporty ones, will have pics of their models outdoor in snowy scenes: hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, hanging out, etc. As these catalogs are probably put together by the art/sales depts sometime during the summer (as they're mailed in the fall for the winter season), realistically there's no way to do these photoshoots in snow here in North America. So where/when are these photoshoots done? There are always new items in the product line, so you can't always reuse pics from the previous year. Does LL Bean, for example, ship the models and clothing to some place in the Southern Hemisphere in July?

They shoot a lot in Colorado about 3 months ahead of print date. You'd be surprised how much of it is on location but faked-- for example the amount of snow, etc.

I work for Eddie Bauer and our fall 2014 photo shoots featuring "models" take place in February here in the beautiful Cascade range. Our athlete shots are done in fun places like Revelstoke and Haines for our recent ski line. The Himilaya is our primary place for our climbing gear and equipment while being used and tested by our guide team. We shoot as much as we can in the states.

mountaineering catalog called Early Winters used to shoot 100 yards from one of my bird study areas in the North Cascades
I also knew a female wilderness ranger who knew the founder well - she said he was nuts, a wierdo, etc. - he used to drive an old 1930s expensive touring car up to the pass from Seattle - pretty risky I guess as one place was called Deadhorse Point for very good reasons... so not all are done in studios or faked - check out a Patagucchi catalog sometime - outdoors people used to send in their own photos for the catalog |

Believe it or not allot of photo shoots for catalogs are shot in China. These shots are very 'canned'. There is a road map for the setting - the lighting, background are pre-designed. Even the cameras have designed settings.
For those of you who have kids in elementary or high school and get photos taken, most if not all aren't professional photographers. They, too, follow a map. They have a standard kit, instructions and map to take photos. What all of them have is personalty: that is to be friendly and sell more pictures. BTW, they aren't paid much either.
