I don't think dad has been keeping track this year... But last year the tally marks on the board in the shop topped 100 mice for the winter. Don't know where the bastards come from, and what they are after as we keep nothing that resembles food in the shop, but we clean up on them every year. Keep 5-10 traps set at all times.

Another trick is to glue them to about a 6"x6" square of cardboard. Makes cleanup nice if you have a bleeder, and it keeps the larger ones from dragging your traps off.

I know what you mean about the little buggers learning the game - I progressed from shooting them in broad daylight, to only at night, to having to go to the green LED light so as not to alert them. I even have to cycle the baits from peanut butter, to cream cheese, to canned dog food, and whatever else I can come up with that's smelly enough. I went from an easy 3-6 or more any day I felt like going after them to some days where I won't get any. I suppose that's good news, with the real goal being to eliminate them entirely (fat chance, surrounded by a good deal of undeveloped land and wetlands). My wife is very happy, but it was nice when there were a few more to "play" with...
Yep, went through all of that. At first I had a hunting dog who loved the game also and she would sit watching quietly at my side until I made the shot. Then she would rush in and give them the death bite if they were still moving and deliver them to me as a prize. We had a good system. It was our bonding time and more interesting than just a neighborhood walk. She passed away at 16 and I tried to teach the new Spaniel pup but no go. He is a lover, not a hunter and doesn't want to get rat blood on his delicate fur... and they might bite! I hunted alone for a while but lost interest over time so I switched to commercial bait boxes. Eight years in this house now and mice or rats are a non-issue.

Poison just works it's way down the food chain where I live. Two female cats and no more rats.
Female cats are mass murderers.

The old fashion way, bail traps and peanut butter.

Our cats are getting old they don't work much.

I love checking my trap lines for mice, not rats.

Had a friend with a Jack Russell that was hell on em.
