If you were going to put a LS in a car?

After owning the 944 I heard of the LS/944 swap...
Now I hear of the LS/RX7...
Now I own a Miata and guess what... LS and Ford 5.0 swap...

As much as I love my Miata I think if I were to do it I would:
A. Buy a car with it already done (so no, I will not be doing this to my Miata)
B. Probably go back to the future and get the 944 conversion, I just flat out loved everything about that car.

In your opinion what is/was the best platform for LS?

I would surly hope you would not put a chebby engine in an FD RX, talk about slowing a car down

The amount of power that can be squeezed out of a rotary is staggering...We had a guy bring one to the shop with 3 rotor engine, and Haltech that needed some TLC..

Easy over 700 hp onn the dyno......

The engine is tiny...

I guess the weigh is the deal killer then? Pretty sure you can get over 700 out of a LS.

Also pretty sure from reading threads about the 944 swap engine weight is a break even on a 944.

Not that I would even want 700HP in a car as small as a 914/Miata/944, wouldn't a 650HP LS be a drop dead reliable engine?

Seriously, the LS sitting in a 944 engine bay is like it was friggin' intended to be there. Especially if done to a turbo, the weight is break even and those cars are just so fun with low end torque.

Ls engine is way better than magic spinning triangles of questionable reliability

With a RX-7 the vacuum assisted brake booster can be used. I originally wanted one for that reason. The car can maintain 50/50 weight distribution with a LS motor, I have seen one on corner balancing scales.

Yep, way, way back when the miata first came out, folks started dropping the 5.0 into them, but these days the LS seems to be the big ticket. I love the Flyin' Miata NA that has the LS in it that's white with Martini graphics. Apparently the Flyin' Miata guys started out as a Porsche shop.

I just can't see spending THAT much money on a miata though. But I bet they are a hoot to drive.

Back when I had my '88 targa, I used to run into a black FD RX-7 that I am fairly certain was sporting an LS. It was darn fast.

It seems like a cheap 944 would be the best swap material. The chassis and car are well engineered and solid. The LS shouldn't cause a balance problem since they are fairly light. You'd have a good solid vehicle with plenty of upgrade potential, but with more engine. And you wouldn't even need 700hp. I suspect a 944 with a 300hp V-8 is probably a hoot to drive. I assume you'd want the drivetrain out of a 951, but maybe not. I'm not that familiar with the strengths and capabilities of a 944.

A Gen 1 Camaro. Maybe an '80s Jaguar XJS.

I've driven a 320+ HP 944 Turbo, stock 2.5L with some turbo upgrades.. it wasn't a stoplight drag car; the boost just took too long to spool. But once it was in the power band, on the highway... it was a freaking missile.

That amount of power but with low end... it'll still weigh about 2800 lbs. And the 944 hatch is so practical.

One of the 914 guys in Houston has 2 V8 914s. I drove "the mild" one, which was only 325 hp. He was in the process of dropping an LS into another 914 and upgrading everything on it to handle the 500+ hp.

I put a LS3 in a 89 951. It turned out very nice but it was a LOT of work.
We bought a new engine from GM with computer, harness etc, Renegade kit
(which did not make it a bolt in) We put it on a chassis dyno and it made more
power at idle then one of our race SC's did at full tilt
Very nice engine
