Dave has the patients of Job. Me not so much. I can't wait to watch this get completed.

Great job so far Dave!!! Can't wait to see the finished product! Not to hijack, but can you ID this headstock? It is off a les paul styled guitar, but not really sure of the make, I don't ever remember seeing a burst type headstock on any gibson les paul, epiphone or any other lp clone...

Fun to watch someone with real skills doing fine work.

Hey Dave,

Got a picture of the body, it is a bolt on neck model. I was thinking at first that it was a Epiphone because of the truss rod cover, but if you look at the headstock, it is the Gibson open book style that Epiphone doesn't use. It looks sort of old, so I am thinking that it is a 70's model Japanese lawsuit guitar of sorts. Don't mean to hijack your thread, just want your opinion when you get a chance between tasks...SmileWavy

Fwiw, I will be making another trade for this one. Will be putting those paf's in it that I got last week or so.

Hi Bill,

I would be leaning towards a kit guitar. But I can't tell for sure from those pix. The open book/mustache is not right. The "V" in the middle is too wide, more like a U. The kit guitars came with a rectangular, uncut headstock. If that were the case, anyone could have tried to copy Gibson's headstock. The lawsuit models were spot on in this regard. That said, the lawsuit models did have bolt on necks, but so do the kits.

Here's a kit for reference.

As for the truss rod cover, it's very easy to buy Gibson covers. I'm sure it was too difficult in the 70's or 80's either.

The headstock looks to be in rough shape based on the pic you supplied. Almost looks like one corner is busted off. It also appears to be mahogany. Lawsuit models would have had a black veneer. Looks like just all about the kits I looked at have mahogany (or whatever wood they are using), no black veneers.

The cavity for the pots could shed a little more light.

Thank you for the compliments. I really appreciate it.

I just think of myself as a guy that is lucky enough to have a workshop to do this in and I find it peaceful to do so. It's also about the only place I can check my ADHD at the door and focus on a single task.

I love working with wood. Whether it be a guitars, the 917 inspired shift knobs I turn, turning in general, or making furniture. :)

I will upload some more pictures when I get it.

There should be a little more work coming up. I just haven't felt like going out of my way to buy acrylic glue. Tomorrow...

The finish isn't up to me. :) We'll have to see how that plays out

You do great work, Dave!!

slodave 12-31-2013 07:18 PM

Thank you!

A little NYE work. Got the two long sides of the binding glued on today. In a couple days, I'll trim the extra off and glue the bottom piece.

My dream is to have a Slodave guitar with Wolfe pickups. Until then, I will just keep banging on the trash cans and pretend that it is music that I am creating :) Happy New Years guys!!!
