Nevermind the fact that they also keep it in daylight mode (high contrast) when driving at night. I guess it must be easier for them to see the map on the GPS unit that way, and don't really need to pay attention to the REAL road...

Then again, they don't test drivers for common sense these days...

Back to the OP's post -- windshield obstruction laws are found in pretty much all states - everything from radar detectors, GPS units, graduation tassels and air fresheners hanging from the rearview mirrors, even EZ-Pass units can be considered to be obstructions. If the OP would have been obnoxious to the officer, he could have given him a ticket instead of a warning for obstruction. At least the OP's poochie wasn't in his lap (I hope!)

And if you get pulled over it is probably because you have a sports car or the LEO is looking for contraband. The V1 or GPS is his excuse to legally pull you over. If you question why your car was pulled, the answer is "have you ever gone fishing?"
As Z observed, the OP's respectful attitude saved him a ticket. Can you imagine what would have happened if he acted like some of the trolls that post in PARF?

Same here in AZ. Every time I go through Kalifornia some cop or highway patrol gives me "the look" for no front tag until they see my AZ license plate.

As for the V1, I have a carpet style dash cover and I just put some velcro on the base of the radar detector and sit it on the dash and it never moves...

Yeah, once got pulled over for a look see, guy had nothing on me so gave me crap about the HS graduation tassel hanging from the rear view. Stupid as he was from the local precinct and it had been a tradition in my HS for decades to display them that way so probably 30-40% of the cars in town had them.

there is always something for which you can be randomly pulled over.
as someone said earlier, it's just like fishing. you set the hook and hope for a big one.
