Buried a friend today

70 years old, murdered for his cellular phone and whatever was in his wallet. I am not a great fan of this dark African continent tonight.

The saddest part is the cell phone makers and service providers could EASILY put a simple way to turn the phone into a brick as soon as it is reported stolen. If the stolen phones are bricks the market is goes to zero. The thefts will stop.

But right now the makers and providers just see another phone sale.

I am sorry for your loss.

Sad how little some people think of life. My condolences to you and to your friends family.

Sorry for your loss. My girlfriend and I just spent two weeks there on holiday. We thought it was such a delightful place we even toured some apartments in Camps Bay. But you can definitely feel an undercurrent of resentment from the have nots and we saw tons of for sale signs all along the Garden Route.

I am sorry for your loss. Regardless of the continent it still amazes me how some segments of society have no regard for human life !

Willem, sorry to hear about that. I lost a really good friend last year in a home invasion in Sunninghill. Always worried about my family that is still living there too.

A farmer down the road from me was murdered a while back for his road stand money. White kids from the slums.

Still sucks.

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers guys. Happened in Johannesburg. Sadly a part of everyday life here. Not the first friend I have lost this way, but the timing just couldn't get any worse.

He was attacked in his garden upon arriving home in the evening, stabbed multiple times and beaten to within an inch of his life. He managed to crawl to safety but not before getting soaked by a rain shower. He was found the next morning, and rushed to hospital where he clung to life for a further two weeks before the pneumonia got him. Great guy who had no family, and who wouldn't hurt a fly. Devoted himself to his community through the Lions Club and Freemasonry (from where I know him.)

If he were a celebrity or well known sports star one could have expected a detailed investigation followed by a trial. For guys like him there is a police case number, with no follow up, and not even a mention in the papers. Actually, the chances of ever finding his killers is absolutely nill.

What a waste.

Sorry for your loss, I hope those responsible are caught and severely punished.
Maybe Winnie still has some necklaces left.

Willem, sorry to hear of your loss.

I see you're in Sandton, I used to visit relatives in Fourways.
