Cali kicked their butt in wine... why bother going across the Atlantic for olive oil?

I kid! I kid!

I prefer Sicilian but that is just a preference thing... however there are some very nice extra virgin olive oils coming out of CA.

Have you tried Greek olive oil?

After the sandal surrounding the oils from Italy.
All I buy now is the Calif. olive oil, they have a Olive Oil council that certifies oils.
I like an oil produce by Corto olive co. from Lodi Ca.

I have ordered a few cases of 6 (ea) from these folks in CA...based on the word of an excellent cook who I met in Portland, OR years ago.
They sell out early.
I'm down to my last bottle and will probably just buy ersatz locally now.
Kinda pricey for my lack of taste.
$22/L, $132/case of 6 + ~ $25 shipping to AZ

I read several articles on Olive Oil and Olive Oil counterfeiting a while back. There is huge money in counterfeiting.

Lately, I've been buying the California Olive Ranch stuff. I'd like to buy their Arbequina, but I can't find it here, so I have to get the regular stuff.

As far as quality, I go by what I read. I taste it plain. If it is good and fresh, it should tickle your throat or maybe even burn and the really good stuff will usually make you cough. It's some chemical in good fresh olive oil that does it.

All the French oil has surrendered to the German oil.

We have some of the best olive oils in the world produced right here in California.

Bari is my everyday go to cooking oil, but for bread, salad, and pasta I use different oils. They are like wines. Each one has a different taste.

I'm lucky that in and around NYC we have a great selection of specialty food stores, etc.. you can get anything..

One great market is Fairway They list 15 olive oyls from around the world that are regularly stocked... In store they often have 6 oyls or so in addition to the regularly stocked oyls..

This one is nice and French. Languedoc

Here is a primer on EVOO - What is Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

For years the Olive Oil industry - mostly in Europe - has been plagued with extra virgin products that have a very low concentration of the real stuff. Don't get bamboozeled. Buy Californian. A few decades ago dozens of people died when an industrial lubricant was used to cut the olive oil. Country of origin and content are still a quagmire in Europe.

The site above is from my wife's families farm - the original stomping grounds of my '75 Targa. Their oil is produced in the heart of California olive country and as pure as they come. No chemical extracts/solvents here! Award winning stuff - Pacific Sun Olive Oil - Eva's blend is named after my niece.

I've head that Italian olive oil is run by the mob and not to be trusted, and recall an incident in Greece in which people were poisoned when motor oil was added.

There is Palestinian olive oil, but I don't want my money going to people cheering on 9/11.

I'll stick with Californian olive oil when buying a large can.
