Costa Concordia Scrap
This behemoth is about to finally be towed for scrap nearly 2 1/2 years later and 2 billion USD later and sold off. I have had a fascination of historical great ships including the Titanic, the Bismarck and a few others but this one hits a little close to home.
Costa Concordia re-floated to be towed away for scrap My close friends are survivors as they were some of the last ones off the ship with whatever they had on them. Over the last 2 1/2 years, they have published their book S.O.S. Spirit of Survival: One Family's Chilling Account of the Costa Concordia Disaster, about that night and their journey home and have since become advocates pushing for change in the cruise industry. It is a really good read.

Somehow the Italian Navy joke comes to mind.

I don't get why they first let the thing sit for a year and a half on the reef, then they float it, celebrate, tow it, let it sink again and now they are celebrating they got it floating again?
Why does it cost $2 bil to scrap? Am I missing something? That's more than 3x the cost of building it. Don't boats get salvaged all the time? I thought it was a positive cash business, albeit done in the 2nd world somewhere. G |

I believe at first it was to recover bodies then the thing started to deteriorate and they wanted to minimize adverse environmental impact.

It would not surprise me if the first year was spent in the law courts to determine who would pick up the salvage bill.

Still one crew member yet to be found. Should happen soon, must be somewhere on board. Very sad and so avoidable, this whole tragedy.

The 2 billion recovery is being paid by the cruise line and insurance. The scrapper still gets to make his money. |

Two Billion to haul it away in one piece is probably less that it would have cost to defend all the lawsuits if they tried to cut it up as it was originally positioned. It would have been difficult to contain all the pollution it could have released into the water around the island. That might have caused an underwater ecological disaster. It had the potential to devastate the local economy of the popular tourist zone. With all that considered, I guess they took the path of least risk.
