Visiting LA - Any Must-See Porsche Destinations?

Hi Guys:

I am visiting LA in a few weeks and find myself with a day to fill up. It's a Sunday, so I know many businesses will be closed, but I'd like to see some SoCal sports car culture! What about Paramount Ranch? Any other ideas?

Mark

The Peterson museum comes to mind. But there are others:

San Sylmar is great for cars in general, they have a free walk in car museum. The rest of the tour requires reservations and a dress code (no t-shirts or a few other things). Fantastic place to visit. Reservations are required for the main museum. Book a few weeks in advance.

The Nethercutt Collection

I'm 10 miles north of the place, call me to do a BBQ.

There's not much to see at Paramount Ranch. Parts of the old track exist, but unless you know what you're looking at, it's hard to make out a racecourse. The drive in the surrounding Santa Monica/Malibu Mountains is fantastic, though. The Rock Store is a motorcycle hangout in the vicinity. Neptune's Net is another motorcycle/surfer hangout along PCH close to the Ventura County border.

Supercar Sunday is in Woodland Hills (a suburb just north of LA in the San Fernando Valley). The last Sunday of the month is the big meet (couple hundred cars), but even on the "off" Sundays at least 40-50 cars show up. The average guy seems to show up in a late model Ferrari. It's in the Macy's parking lot at the corner of Topanga and Erwin. Show up at 7-8, start leaving at 9. Everyone gone by 10.

Another great drive is going the route 1 from Santa Monica along the coast through Malibu to "Leo Carillo Beach". Then turn right on Mullholland Highway and follow it through the practically empty Sant Monica Mountains untill it ends at the Topanga Canyon Boulevard and on the 101 freeway. Then proceed from there to wherever you are going next.

I did this going the opposite direction last month. It's pretty cool when you get to that corner when all of a sudden, the Pacific Ocean appears right in front of you. Nice drive with some fun tight, twisty sections.

Angeles Crest Highway and the Peterson Museum are both great. One of these days I'm going to check out the car museum in San Slymar that Hugh R suggested.

Have a great time in LA, Mark.

I'm starting this adventure in Las Vegas and won't be headed to California until Saturday morning, with a few stops on the way that will put me in LA Saturday evening. So unfortunately I won't be able to do Saturday on this trip. But I'll be back!

Some great ideas in this thread guys - thanks a lot!

I live in the Santa Monica Mtns. If you'd rather take a hot rod run around Mulholland, get breakfast at The Rock Store, or lunch at Neptunes Net, I'm free to cruise you around on Sunday.

Mike's offer to run the 355 up Angeles Crest sounds fun too. If you take him up on that offer, I'd love to join you guys. Maybe we can get others too. Let's make a gathering out of our icy cold visitor's visit.

Sent you a PM Mark. I actually live in Palmdale, just "over the hill" from LA. If you're coming from Vegas, you either go through there, or Ontario.

Who's in?

We could meet at the Starbucks off Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon and the 101 Fwy, then head down Malibu Canyon to Mulholland, through Malibu Lake to the Rock Store for a late breakfast, then run The Snake and over to Decker Cyn down to the beach...Grab a coffee..or beer...at Neptune's Net, then head up Encinal Cyn, do the windy part of Mulholland, and down Westlake Blvd to the 101. Another return option, closer for LA guys, would be to head south on PCH to Old Topanga or La Tuna Cyn, exiting in Woodland Hills.

I'm not in town for a few weeks but it sounds like you guys are itchin' to get together! I arrive on the evening of January 25th and have an early flight on the 27th. I'm staying in the hills above the NHRA Museum in Pomona. I made it to Mulholland on my last visit but a blast in a Porsche or Ferrari sounds awesome!

That was one of the highlights of my trip, Topanga Canyon Blvd is awesome.

I would suggest a Pelican meet as discussed. I got together with a bunch of guys at a bar, it was a blast.

I could be coerced into joining for brunch/lunch. Wouldn't join for the drive, though.

I could be convinced if my stock '79 Targa would be in a position to keep up with everybody. So is the meeting on?

I'm up for it this weekend too, but it looks like it may be postponed until the 26th when Mark is in town. MIke? You in this weekend?

Porwolf, Don't worry about keeping up. Mulholland Hwy from Malibu Lake past The Rock Store and up the Snake is patrolled like the boarder at El Paso/Juarez. The only places where you can run unrestricted are Decker Cyn and the super windy area of Mulholland between Encinal and Decker. It not high speeds, but the curves are banked and have a great rhythm to them.
