Well, we all love our 911s. Ive had some of the best track sessions Ive ever had in MX5s. You cant can get them out shape- but not with power, its true.
Unless its wet and then theyre about as much fun as you can sitting down. And extracting 10ths in car that relies on its light weight and chassis is a challenge. At my "local" track which is a tight technical little circuit, a well driven Miata can embarrass big HP cars. But- not on anything with big straights. |
What's a fair price for a first gen mx5 with low miles (74k)?

A non rusty version NA commands a surprisingly high price. An NB which is the second generation not so much. I would have bought a clean NA two years ago but a non rusty one is hard to find here. If you go to Miata net forums you can get some idea of what NA's go for. I am guessing $6000 to 9000 for a really clean one with those kind of miles. |
Not in California, they are very reasonably priced.

I have a confession. I drive a Miata now too. I bought it over the 4th of July weekend and have been enjoying the heck out of it ever since. My wife drove it for the first time yesterday. She couldn't believe how much more precise the shifter is over her 1987 Carrera.
Data point for you. Northern CA car. 1997 NA Miata with 104k miles, 5 speed, leather seats, great shape, bone stock except for stereo and I am the 4th owner. Got this fantastic canyon carver for $2750. |

It's a 4cyl 1.8L supercharged engine this is truly the "Rich Mans maita". Leather interior (shows some wear), air conditioning works great, never been in any accidents, runs great with only 180k original miles. The only con is that 1 of the hydraulic cylinder for the convertible top is leaking hydraulic fluid, but the motor works great. Very fun car to drive, great gas mileage and has no mechanical issues. Recently smog checked. Asking only $2750. better than Miata, bmw z3 z4, s2000, 350z, g35,ect https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/d/1999-mercedes-benz-slk230/6412174696.html |
At some point the hair dressers have moved on from the first generation mx5. My thinking is light weight DD.
I can get one locally for $3,300; 74k; coilovers and turbo added. Seems ok for all those things. May look at it this weekend. |
I had a 99 NB which is great but the NC is considerably better but of course more money. This is my 2013 NC.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1512478041.jpg

I started with a 1st gen (last year) '97. I upgraded from 14" wheels to 15" wheels and added adjustable coilover sleeves and springs to the Bilsteins. I prefered the better grip of the 15" wheels and stiffer suspension of the stiffer springs. My '97 came with the optional hardtop. I did swap out the softtop for a tan one with a glass window when the plastic window got cloudy.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308622223.jpg My wife had a '99 which was a first year of the 2nd gen. It was stock other than aftermarket 15" wheels. It felt like it rolled a bit less in stock form, and hers had LSD which I preferred. It's not on in the above photo, but we repainted the hardtop and put it on the wife's car since she had no desire to drop the top. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1283996773.jpg I then sold the '97 and got an '04 MSM which is the factory turbo with 17" wheels. I upgraded to 15x8" wheels and got rid of the visually attractive but big and heavy boat anchor wheels. Other than that it was stock (well, I added a boost gauge). It was the best of the bunch as far as how stiff the suspension was from the factory (stiffer springs and sways and Bilsteins stock). It also had LSD stock. They were all great little cars. |
bought a worn first year NA several years back for $500. took endless ribbing from friends. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1512481701.png
this pic is required posting in all Miata threads. |
honest opinion is the Miata is tough to beat. wouldn't mind another one but no autocross opportunities close by.
|
When I bought the MSM, I test drove a couple of NCs (3rd gen). They were great (and just about as fast as the MSM), but I preferred the MSM look and feel. The NCs are based on the RX8 platform.
If I didn't have a Boxster S, I would probably be looking closely at the ND miatas (4th gen). Those are very sharp looking little cars, and probably the best of the bunch. They seem to have taken a step back in that they are smaller and lighter than the previous cars and more like the originals, but obviously, much more up to date and better with a little more power. |
Maybe Wayne should start offering Miata parts.
3300 is a great price for a car that is hard to break, quick to warm up, and easy to work on and modify. |
I know the feeling. Every time I go for a drive in the Pagani those slammed Hondas are all over me.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is the loads of YouTube content on Miata DIY. I'm going to be replacing the timing belt, water pump and deals with the help of YouTubers.
|
My dad had an NC Miata. Unlike the NA and NB I found the interior to be very spacious, and it was of course a great driving car. I haven't driven an ND yet but I have sat in one, the interior is quite nice and everything is perfectly placed. I think they are great looking cars and crazy lightweight, I would definitely daily drive one.
