I drive a miata...
so why is it that most of the folks that try to goad me into racing are driving cars that have double the cylinders, 3x the cubic inches and 2-4x as much HP?
Seriously, I've been challenged by corvettes lots and lots of times. I remember one guy, probably in his 50s with the bleach blonde cougar in the passenger seat gunning it next to me in a Z06 in between two lights that were very close together while both stared over at me. And that was back when I was driving the plane jane, black, no spoilers miata with 130hp. Just the other night, I had some dufus in a flat-silver CTS-V try to race me. At least now I'm driving a bright red miata with a spoiler (stock) and turbo (stock), but it's still only 180hp. I just don't get it. I'd feel silly driving something with a monster V-8 and 400+hp challenging a miata. There are times that I wish I was driving an LSx conversion miata just so I could surprise the hell out of these guys. The good news is that I don't think I ever get challenged by someone driving a Porsche. |
So do it. Flyin' Miata 1 800 FLY MX5s

I think this is probably some sort of secret pickup ritual, like toe tapping in the men's bathroom or hanging a certain color bandana out of your pocket.

Some guys just need to be reassured, even if the fight isn't fair. Pretend like you're into it until the light turns green, and then drive slowly off while they smoke the hides to the next light.
|
Ignore those idiots. Don't even acknowledge them. Be at peace with yourself.:)

Say it loud and proud. I well remember the day my Mrs in her completely standard 1.8 MX5 completely embarrassed guys in a 993, 996TT and a million horsepower Cobra on wet track day. If you can make a Miata go fast, you can drive.

Lure them into the canyons and kick their a$$ like I do! :)

They were not trying to race you, they are just that much faster. Meant in jest, miata's are cool cars. I'd drive one. |
If you are at the lights and see a cop hiding up the road do the VROOOM VROOOM thing to these guys.
|
Its ok Steve. The Honda kids are always trying to race me in my S2000, lets not talk about the pick up trucks. When I had my NA, the soccer moms were racing me to the right turn lane. Yes they beat me each and every time. My Miata had all of 37 HP I think. it sure feels that way.

Make a sign about 2 feet wide by 1 foot tall with bold block letters that says...
DON'T REV YOUR ENGINE AT ME. THIS LITTLE CAR WILL BEAT YOURS LIKE A RENTED MULE. ...and keep it behind the seat... whip it out and hold it up as necessary. ;) |

And once in a while, 5-0 is exactly at the right place at the right time. :D |
Just jealous - ignore them. Ferrari Schmarrri, Corvette (umm) Schmovette. Jealousy is a really nasty personally trait that is best left to 16 year old school girls.

Well, the Miata is the greatest little sports car ever known. And it makes a lot of people happy.
It would only make sense that some miserable person who has tried to buy his way into automotive happiness would want to try to annoy you, just to prove that buying happiness every few years is the point, and better than being happy with what you have. So smile and wave, knowing that in trying to make you feel inferior, they are just demonstrating that they are sick puppies, looking to make others feel bad in order to vindicate insatiable avarice. Simply sitting a Miata looking happy is galling. Pitiable, really, but nothing improves a bad mood more than passing it on. SO give them a big smile and a wave. If they are part of the club, they will smile back. If they aren't, it's really not your problem. |
Perhaps they were angry you had the top up?
Gets my goat every time, seeing a topped vert in nice weather... |
Raced miata's in spec miata, ita, its classes.
Drove at alot of porsche and bmw track days. If you can drive, these can be fast little buggers on the track. Passed lots and lots of the German cars over the years. Never driven one on the street. That would be bringing a dull knife to a gun fight. Gary |
