RIP, Mr. Seeger. Loved your music and creativity.
.
A registered Communist, as I recall reading some time ago.

Seeger was 17 when he joined the Young Communist League and he became a member of the Communist Party of America six years later. In the 1940s, his political affiliations saw him blacklisted and later indicted for contempt of Congress. While he "backed away" from organized politics in the 50s and 60s and eventually denounced Stalin, his world view remained essentially unchanged. In a 1995 interview he said: "I still call myself a communist, because communism is no more what Russia made of it than Christianity is what the churches make of it."

Any truth that he joined the communist party as a way to protest that the Dems and Pubs were not letting blacks in?

To live that long writing music about social issues and performing in front of audiences world wide....yeah he lived a full life.

RIP Pete!

during the time of the nazi-soviet pact it was communist party policy to oppose U.S. involvement in the war. we were supposed to stand by while hitler and stalin divided europe between themselves.

pete seegar wrote a folk song telling roosevelt to stay out of the war.

that is all you need to know about him.

Really? Because I believe Charles Lindbergh and Henry Ford had the same views. So is that all we need to know about them?

RIP, Pete.

There were many reasons and motivations for the segregationists of the time.
Not all of them adopted that policy to toe communist party lines. Some were actually PRO-American.

It was impossible to separate the politics from the man and his music because he wanted it that way. There is no denying his talent, but I abhor his politics so I never cared for his music. He was an unrepentant communist and apologist for Stalin, justifying his "excesses" as what was necessary to create a workers' paradise. He, like other American Communists, fought to keep the US out of WWII before the German invasion of Russia and then turned on a dime to demand a second front as soon as the invasion occurred. Lindberg and Ford were anti-Semites who had no objection to fascism sweeping Europe; Seeger was a communist who was willing to side with fascism when his overlords told him to. There is a special place in Hell for all three of them but there's no reason we can't mark Seeger's passing and remember him for all that he was, both good and bad. But as far as song go, the Hammer song has to be one of the most annoying ever written. I can't stand that thing.

I will always remember him for building the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. When they built that boat, the Merrimack river where I grew up was one of the 10 most polluted rivers in the US. Things are a lot different today, due in no small part to heightened public awareness.

In those days even Richard Nixon could see the value of clean air and water. But it started with the Clearwater.

Back at ya.
Scenes from independence day, where the mush-headed stripper made a sign that said "welcome aliens" and went to the roof-top party to welcome their new friends.
She didn't hate, she was nice and welcoming and friendy even though or because of the fact that she could count the number of her brain cells on one hand.
She was open-minded and mindless at the same time.
She embraced her new friends and did not have the mental capacity to recognize that they meant her harm, right up until the split second they destroyed everything she had and everything she'd ever known.
I hope I never get that naive.

In the movie it happened right away but in real life it happens much slower.
it can be seen coming if one opens one's eyes and pays attention to the facts.

One of the few to stand up to Joe McCarthy, and he had his say too.

If I have to make a choice, I'd prefer to be a good American and a good citizen of the Earth. But if I have to choose, I will always choose the Earth over being a ''good'' American, or trading my conscience for a fat wallet.

More to the point, if I were to judge the man by his enemies, I'm neither surprised or disappointed.
