1928 Star
Picking up a car over the weekend and the guy also had a 1928 Star. Started life as a Michigan car so it is pretty rusty. Looked pretty complete but I really didnt know what I was looking at. Wooden spokes on steel rims!! It is for sale. I can provide contact info to any interested parties. He threw out $5k but is negotiable.

That's a good looking car.
If I had time to do it I would be all over that. |

Durant was one of the founders of GM....
He left and started Durant motors with the same multi-brand idea... Star, Rugby, etc. Wood spoked wheels with metal rims were fairly common. Last edited by tcar; 01-27-2014 at 12:52 PM.. |

So now I am thinking of buying this car. Not sure what I would do with it, probably just clean it up a little and display as a museum piece. Any thoughts as to a fair price? Owner mentioned $5k but is slightly negotiable.

I would guess it's equivalent to a Hudson of that era.
That price is likely fair to high if the engine is okay.

Sure don't see many of them listed, but being rare doesn't necessarily make them valuable. Probably don't need to say it as we're all car nutz, but are you interested in it just because its there?
Have you found comparable listings in past or current Hemmings? From only what I can see in the pics, it looks fairly complete but needs everything. Planning on doing all the work yourself? If confident in your panel, paint, mechanical, interior workmanship, probably will drop an additional $10k to $15k into it and that's being very resourceful. How correct do you want to make it? A shot in the dark guess in value - thinking if it was a choice resto, might fetch $25 -$30k. I wouldn't be afraid if it had a seized engine but if the block is cracked, you've got some hunting and praying to find another. Lots of glass is needed. Safety glass can be special cut. Chrome work is going to take some expense. Wheels are no biggie and plenty of sources. Without trying to insult, you have to lay it on the line and if you want to breath soul back into it, would think $2,000 to $2,500 as it sits. I will add, if that's the original color and scheme, very sharp and would make for an attractive distance club tour ride. Good luck. edit: is that a Lotus in the background?

Looking at the engine again. Excellent six and easy rebuild, plenty of parts available as its actually a Continental. At worst if it has a cracked block, it was a popular engine - many years and applications so it wouldn't be that difficult to find another. Carb is no problem. If the manifold is junk, there might be re-cast still available.

Thanks guys.
I would not restore it, just clean it up and look at it. Maybe sit in it and make engine noises! At least until I finish up some other stuff. I may offer him $2k and go from there. Yes, that is a Lotus in the foreground. That is why I was there. It is now in my garage! He also has an early 70's Triumph Bonneville that I am trying to get. But he is being stubborn! ![]()

While on the subject of 'Star', thought you might get a chuckle at this one off. A few pics while she was getting her breast worked on... er' valve job.

I think I'd clean it up a little, get it running and drive it as is. Can't fake patina like that! Cool old car!
