Therefore One decided to take a break from one's apparent lack of effort to earn it, deciding instead he should wait. After all, perhaps greatnes, in seeing its mistake, might decide to arrive in One's mail, or in the steadfast encouragement of his, (One's), fellowship, that he deigned to call friends... GLWT. :) For while One might climb up on his own bootstraps, it is ever so much more difficult for one to ride his own coattails... Perhaps One should ''Go Figure.'', or find another grocer with a free buffet. Or maybe, if One could read the words of others in front of a mirror, he could take them as if the were his own, and thus find some value in them. One could only hope. |
I'm glad I have some of you here to remind me that I'd rather be young, arrogant, and dumb than old, arrogant, and still f'king dumb.

Hmm, I think I meant to post that in another thread in another open window, but I think it works for this one as well, so I'll just leave it.

TABS fell out of his tractor, couldn't b'lieve what he seen. Laid on the ground and shook fearin' for his life. Then he ran all the way to town screamin' it came out of the sky. Well, a crowd gathered round and a scientish said it was marsh gas. Joe came and made a speech about raising the Mars tax. The Vatican said, woe, the Lord has come, Hollywood rushed out an epic film And Obama said it was a Tea Party plot. Oh, the newspapers came and made TABS a national hero. O Reilley and Monica said they'd put him on a network TV show. The White House said, put the thing in the Blue Room, the Vatican said, No, it belongs to Rome And TABS said, it's mine and you can have it for seventeen million. |

I don't enjoy their failure, but I do enjoy watching them learn from the experience and becoming better for it. Since I'm now one of the OLD guys in my industry, I was recently "invited" to attend generational diversity training. Great. I was surprised that it did provide some valuable insight. Younger generations hate it when we old farts tell stories. They don't have time for stories and just want to be hand fed information as if the world was a smart phone. Quote:
What if you have to fix a watch someday? What they did not realize was that through telling stories of past experiences, we were doing much more than teaching them details, we we were GIVING them our experience. Not only the numbers or facts, but also the factors leading up to it, the situations, the mindset, the proper way to aproach the situation, etc. I could see some of them get it and I knew they'd end up more successful for it. Others not so much. No sense wasting my time or boring them any more with stories, they can spend 35 years learning it all on their own, as painful as that may be. |

I have been reading history since the 2ND Grade, by the time I was a Junior in HS I was considered to be an expert on WW2 and lectured on the subject to my teachers History classes. ....I have always been interested in hearing peoples stories about their experiences in life. BTW I do have a piece of paper that say I have been done edjucated by that University in CA that is down by the sea and beach. If things had been a bit different in my life there is no telling where I could have gone, but you only do things in life that you are ready to do. People say that the sincerest form of flattery is to mimic...if that is so then I have target market penetration. However one needs recognition and compensation for ones contribution. What I know was not gained for free, I paid a heavy price to gain the understanding that I have. Further I have a debt to repay to the people who sacrificed to help me get to where I am at in life and that can be repaid with recognition. Further intellectual capacity and property is a trade-able commodity and as such deserves compensation for ones efforts. The question is, are ones efforts of sufficient quality to be trade-able? The following and the date it was written should sufficiently answer that question: The Coming Democratic Party Revolution Mon, 06/09/2008 - 22:41 — tabs "It was Hitler who created the modern concept of revolution.....Modern revolution did not overcome power but "seized" it, and employed bureaucratic rather than bellicose methods. It was a quiet process." "Hitler" pg 497 by Joachem Fest In 1933 Hitler's National Socialist Workers Party received apx 33% of the vote which the the biggest percentage of any political party in Germany. As such Hitler was selected to be Chancellor of Germany to Hindenburg's President. Hindenburg was 85 and in 1934 passed away. It was soon after that, that Hitler started to coalesce his power in Germany. Apply that to the rhetoric of Obama, and the Democratic Party. They are aiming at nothing less than a revolution in America. This is a question that better be answered before the general election in November 2008. What are the specific proposals prescribed by Obama and the Democrats in limiting "special interests." influence on the political process. Will those proposals limit the access of the rival Republican Party from ever ascending to power again. Or is America going to have a single political party in power from this time on. I will take that $17M USD now... |

All one has to say is.IRS, NRLB, DOJ, NSA , Obama's extra Constitutional changes to Obama Care and his 2014 State of the Union exclamation of using executive power to achieve his policy goals ...to prove the sagacity of ones above musings about the then future actions of Obama and his Party
One can already hear the criticism, "Ohhh so you are saying you can predict the future, and how did that SB prediction work out for ya?" No I don't really predict the future so much as I can read people like a book and as such can figure out what they are likely going to do As far as economies it is based upon the collective toil of human beings and all one has to do is figure out the sentiment erg "Animal Spirit"of the aggregate herd. |

A student of history would know better than this. But before this thread gets PARF'd, as you are a "man of wealth and taste", sir, I *do* have sympathy for you. History is not a set of facts to be cherry-picked at a whim to support arguments for or against current policy. History is about context and culture and facts. Without all of those things, "connecting dots" is nothing short of intentional dishonesty. This is from a guy with an actual degree in modern European history. Oddly, that degree never made me a dime, but it makes a nice wall hanging. And it allows me to spot folks intent on deception when it comes to drawing historical analogies. |

Off the top of the head, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it...and one was pointing out the historical means to achieving ones policy goals as a parallel precedent. And now let me take you out to the deep water...one is not a revisionist historian, nor does one cherry pick ones history to be dishonest. One fully understands the context, culture and facts of both times in this case very well. The Fest statement about "MODERN REVOLUTION" was an observation about how Hitler seized power in Germany, by bureaucratic means...Hitllers time was fraught with a weak and fractured Weimar democracy in uncertain economic times. I have observed since the early 90's the ever greater fracturing of the American Republic and the increasing uncertainty of the American economy which mirrors some aspects of the Weimar. So it is applicable to make the parallel on that level. One is not saying it is going to be an exact duplication of the Dritte Reich...but the means to the end of Centralizing governmental power is the same. That is the warning from history so as not to repeat it. So that America does not fall into the trap of authoritarianism and it seems evermore of a possibility as time has passed. . Was it an accurate observation in 2008? Just read the headlines about the use of the IRS, DOJ , Harry Reid in the Senate, and Obama's executive antics and you will note a high correlation as to the means used by both Hitler and the Obama/Democrats in enacting their policies. In other words one was saying that is how they are going to do it. that is the means they are going to use to achieve their policy goals. So s that really historically dishonest... and what was the Obama 08 slogan again.....Hope and....CHANGE and what do Revolutions do but make a...change..... |

Well, the internet historical cherry-picker cannot resist the Santayana paraphrase - this is true of all of them, IME. The problem with the comparison you posit is that it has been done over and over and OVER since the end of WWII when anyone with an axe to grind has a problem with some policy action or other. Drawing lines between a bunch of random dots to paint the picture you want to sell doesn't make the dot-connecting valid, or even remotely logical. Culture, context, facts. All three need to be present. Not merely some aspects that are germane to your particular talking point. Here's the thing that makes me smirk a little over the sky-is-falling rhetoric that some of the simple-minded repeat - this same line of reasoning has been in constant use for AT LEAST the last 30 years in one way or another. What most amuses me is that useful idiots often regurgitate the propaganda that they hear elsewhere. The exact same propaganda, without even their own take. I'm afraid your particular "wisdom" has been so oft-repeated in the last 4 years that even the gilding of historical backing has mostly been rubbed off, and all that is left is the weak plaster of partisan hyperbole and overheated rhetoric. Underlying the whole business is the unproven. The unproven idea that malice lies at the very heart of it all. Not only unproven, but lacking in all evidence. But the humor remains - the humor that the last 5 presidents have been likewise castigated by partisans of various stripes, in almost exactly the same way. That Santayana quote now takes on some rather humorous irony. |
