Marty Robbins - Race Car Driver / Owner

Who knew? I was watching one of the new car 'reality' shows called AmericaRna and this segment featured an old guy that had what was left of Marty Robbins' circle track car!

For those of you who do not know who he was to music, his style of country/western - swing with a velvet voice scored many, many hits and greatly influenced the following generation of country music performers.

Turns out he was also a big circle track race car guy, owned / drove what was a late model and later; grand national stock car!! The old guys who commented in the show who knew and raced with him stated he was a very good and competitive driver.

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl

Night time would find me in Rosa's Cantina
Music would play, Faleena would whirl...

I saw that episode. Is is cool that they found the same guy to paint the numbers that painted the number for Marty. I am enjoying that series.

Story was that he so wanted to beat Richard Petty he would run an illegal size motor just to get up next to the King, "Wave" to him and then drop back knowing he wouldn't pass tech even if he won. Today he would probably be a "Start and Park" competitor but he was the type of personality that made Grand National racing a great series back in the day.

I knew! He was certainly a character.
