Estate sale finds

I am pretty much a sucker for estate/garage sales--there was a great one this past weekend close to home. This house was packed--guy was definately a "car guy"--lots of misc. parts, tools, old Hemmings, trophys from car show victories, and lots of old gun stuff--the majority of which were picked over by the time I arrived. I admit it takes patience, as some people are just plain rude and push/shove, but I always like to see what is out there--the sellers are having another at this location on 3/8/14, since they haven't had time to do the basement, garage, or attic yet.
My picks.
(2) bicycles half-off after 12:00 got this pair for $50.00. The yellow bike is some type of W. German folding bicycle--butterflies on all the emblems, friction-powered headlamp--missing the chain guard and needs tires, but not bad.

The blue bike is a Sport something has a double headlight, which I am trying to figure out Needs tires, but is cleaning up nicely. The rims and chrome are shining up with some compound and the box of steel wool I also purchased at the sale (for 1.00). Someone loved this bike, the western auto speedo/odo shows close to 800 miles

late 60's chevy truck gauge cluster--5.00

This took me a while to figure out--at first I thought it was a leak-down tester. It is a braided air hose with a threaded spark plug hole attachment on one end, a "Ford" branded air pressure gauge, and a small wrench/valve stem attachment on the other--I did figure out what it is, but anyone else want to guess? Cost me fifty cents.

Also got some other odds and ends--can't wait to see what he had in the garage.

Good stuff. the Chevy guage cluster fits 68 to 72 year models. Craiglist it and you will sell it.

It's an air/tire pump.

Home made compression tester.

EDIT: "valve stem attachment"? Think Patrick is correct.

It probably looks something like this when it's uncoiled.

Correct! Thread one end into spark plug hole, run engine, attach other end to tire valve--inflate tire. Gauge reads PSI and also, "run engine slowly while using".

I guess these were popular back in the day--especially with tractors. Just thought it was a neat piece with the Ford logo. I love finding old tools like this.

I happened upon an estate sale in a local neighborhood a couple weeks ago. Amazing how much stuff some folks accumulate. Seemed to be run through a liquidation outfit. Everything seemed outrageously priced - $100 for an old cassette player, vinyl albums were $5 each, 2T floor jack $75, tons of old kitchen stuff and housewares, etc... no real deals to speak of. Was fun to basically walk the house and see how the folks lived. I was more interested in the actual property but the house, desirable street with good views but needed work, was already sold.

So it fills your tire with gasoline vapor?

No,
The air going into the tire was air from the engine compartment, but not out of the cylinder, if I remember correctly. As the engine ran, you could hear the thing sucking air.
I do remember it seemed to take a heck of a long time to pump up a hay wagon tire with one, using a 250 cu in Chev 6. (Faster than using the hand pump, though!)

My big score from an estate sale was a jointer plane (think hand plane about 18 inches long, for making edge to edge joints). It needed a plane iron, so I got it for about $5. I figured the plane iron was going to be pricey, but the local hardware store had one for $6.95. It had been on the shelf for about ten years.

My other score was a painting I bought for .25 when I was a kid. Turned out to be a sepia water color by a regionally known artist and was worth about $50 a decade ago.
I must have had better taste then.

Oh, one thing about the guage package: In a '68 Chev half ton with the 250 cu in 6, a three on the tree and a 4:10 (I think) rear end, if you were cruising at 70 mph, you could actually watch the gas guage drop!
Best

My dear neighbor Mary (92 years old) across the street passed away a month ago. They had an estate sale where they brought in stuff from other estates to make use of the opportunity to sell all of this stuff.

I am seriously disgusted w/ the vulture like attitude of most people that came to this estate sale. Some jackalope actually parked in my drive way so I couldn't get out. I wouldn't of been surprised to see a fist fight break out over some trinket. Lost a bit of faith in humanity.

I cringe every time we have a neighborhood garage sale, exact same mindset and people. I would much rather donate my old stuff to a worthy cause.

There is a valve that opens when the engine's piston moves down on the intake stroke so ambient air can be drawn into the cylinder. There is nothing to stop the fuel/air mixture from going into the cylinder too, so presumably some gasoline vapor gets into the tire.

Just curious... other than someone parking in your driveway, what part of this bothers you and why?

Agreed.

My wife wants to spend all of a Saturday haggling with folks over pennies, OK. But I'd rather not.

I don't think I ever scored something good at a garage sale or estate sale. Maybe it is because I get up late on weekends? I'd kill myself if I had to wear those TABS shoes, so that's probably why. Shoes are one area (unlike guns), where synthetic materials certainly have helped to improve the experience.

My wife likes hosting garage sales. Always have to put in the ad "no early birds", otherwise, you'll have some ahole ringing your door bell at 6 am wanting to see if you had tools, watches or jewelery - looking for that first dibs. Of course all we usually have is total junk the thrift store won't take.

The lack of overall civility in going over possessions of someone's life so callously. Reminded me of a shark feeding frenzy. Like I said, I was fully expecting a brawl in front of my neighbors house.

I've seen better behavior by all at an auto parts swap meet.

Yup. As George mentioned, the vultures will start circling at 5 am. Pathetic feeding frenzy for junk.
