Turbo Tax 2013

Who uses Turbo Tax and if so do you do your taxes online or purchase/download the software? I have always bought the software rather than do online. I have used Deluxe in the past and it has always been adequate but for investments it seems that they are now recommending Premier.

If you efile with the online version it appears that there is an additional $29.99 fee that TT charges for the the efile of federal and then of course the charge for state efile as well. You pay for this out of refund money.

I have always found Turbo Tax to do a good job with my taxes, used it for the last five years or so.

Any input appreciated..........

I do the online version (I dont' have a windows machine to run it locally), use Deluxe since we file jointly and have some deductions (medical) and investments (the free version only does the equivalent of the 1040EZ), pay $50 each year, file electronically included in that. No state income taxes here in Florida.

I have been using Turbo Tax for decades. I just get the local version. I can download it and have it up and running easily. The Delux version comes with a e-file federal. I just buy the state add on and have it all done in a day or so.

It is stupid that with our federal tax laws it requires that much work and a computer program to do my simple taxes. That is a different subject that would move this thread to PARF.

I buy the software, Deluxe. Last year, I think I bought and just downloaded it from Amazon.

All my Schwab transactions download into it. I might be a bit old fashion, but I don't like the idea of that much info hanging out in cyberspace. I admit I'm uneducated about what the real risk is.

I would certainly agree. If they can hack Target, they could most likely do the same with TT although it hasn't happened, someone is working toward that end.

My main concern was whether deluxe can handle some stock, mutual fund purchase and sales transactions.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone.

I've used it for years after no luck with two different accountants who made more mistakes than a 2nd grader.

I just use the basic since I don't have a bunch of itemizing, state taxes or the rest. I do have dividends, interest, capital gains, K-1's, etc and basic handles that stuff just fine.

I just buy online since even if you buy the CD, it's going to go online and update to the latest version. Do computers even have CD drives anymore?

I've used it since 1994. Have even done complicated tasks like selling one rental house, and buying another.

I like how it tracks your info for year to year and you don't have to enter it again each year.

It also download my account info from investments and I don't have to even enter the info from the 10-99......

Very similar to TurboTax, but free to file federal and $12.95 for state:

Basis issues (K1's) are where all but the best tax software (and I'm not even talking about turbo tax) fall short. NOT a good place for a 'whoops'.

I've used Turbo Tax Deluxe for the past 10 or more years.
I don't mind paying a little extra as I end up filing about 5 returns (immediate family members) for Federal and Georgia State. Filing the Georgia State returns is quicker than it would take me to fill out my name on the form.

I have been using Turbo-tax for many years. I always buy the CD version as I generally file a couple of returns besides my own. Also, after I file for 2013 for instance I will make a copy (or several of that return) and play "what if" throughout 2014. As a rule my returns vary very little year to year and this allows me to see (for example) what a conversion of XX$ from my traditional to a Roth IRA will do to me tax-wise.. how capital gains on a sale of stock will play out tax-wise, etc.

And as someone else pointed out, it loads last years basic return so essentially all I have to do is fill in the new numbers.

Same here, and I did the CD version for years spanning more PCs than I care to remember. As I recall, sometimes it was a PITA when I had to reenter previous year's data etc. because I had upgraded. Switched over to the online version several years ago (via a link through my credit union's site)....no regrets.

I have used TurboTax for longer than I can remember. Before that did my taxes by hand with a calculator.

I use Deluxe for my home taxes. I have stock/bond/mutual finds and a simple hobby business. It has all the forms I need and does all I need.

The only thing I wish for is it having the 1041 forms for my kid's trusts but they are simple enough to do by hand.

I switched to it a few years ago for a couple of reasons. !: My tax situation became much more simple after retirement. 2: I used the same tax guy for years, partly because I wanted to sort of do my part in supporting local, small business. But I could tell he was raising fees by disproportionate increments each year. His loss now.

I use the local (not web) version of TurboTax. I usually can pick it up at Costco cheaper than what they sell it online/download for.

I've used the online version for a few years now and will do so again this year. I was paying an accountant to do it and I caught some big mistakes, so I do it myself now...

HAD used it for years, until the program made a mistake. 3 yrs ago, TT miscalculated the amount of state tax. I received audit, bill from state for missed taxes, and penalty for non payment. How would any of you like to get a bill from the state for approx $7000 in September?!
Of course TT is "guaranteed" right? If you plan on filing a claim, you better have lots of time on your hands.
In the end, they did refund the cost of the program...
Have never/will never use them again.

I am concerned with data safety. So I buy the TurboTax CD, run it locally and print / mail returns. Only save to media, not my hard drive. A tax return will rip you a new one, if a identity thief gets a hold of it.

Maybe I am paranoid, but it only takes a little more effort than an online filing.
