The Official Daily Driver Thread

I don't know if I have the authority to declare anything 'Official' here, but I did do a search and didn't see a thread like this so here it goes.

I'd venture to guess that most of us here have a job; and having a job normally requires that you drive to it. I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone here relies on to get to work. So if you would like, please provide the following detail and a picture of your 'daily driver'.

Year/Make/Model: 2002 Acura RSX

Transmission type: 5 speed manual

Hwy/City Driving Environment %: 50/50

Current Mileage: 265,000

Miles driven weekly (to and from work only): 600

Average MPG: 32

How long have you been using this DD: 7 years

Reliability - scale of 1 to 10: Definite 10!

Repairs during ownership: AC compressor, Clutch Slave Cylinder, Cleaned the Idle

Speed Control Valve. That's it - sill using the same clutch!

General Comments (if any): This is a great commuter vehicle. Small, quick, good MPG, ultimate in reliability, looks decent.

Would you recommend this to others as a DD (1 to 10 scale; 10 being highly recommended)?: Definitely a 10!

http://img.favcars.com/acura/rsx/pic...x_2002_1_b.jpg

Jim Richards 02-21-2014 06:14 AM

Year/Make/Model: "Let's just say vintage"/Richards/Jim

Transmission type: variable speed manual

Hwy/City Driving Environment %: 0/100

Current Mileage: Unknown

Miles driven weekly (to and from work only): ~2.5

Average MPG: ~2.5 miles per gallon of coffee & water

How long have you been using this DD: 8 years, but much longer for non-commuting purposes

Reliability - scale of 1 to 10: 9 (I have my off days)

Repairs during ownership: 4 pairs of shoes

General Comments (if any): If the weather really sucks, I take the bus.

Would you recommend this to others as a DD (1 to 10 scale; 10 being highly recommended)?: 10, for short commutes

The Daily Driver for me is my 1986 El Camino.

326,000 miles now. I bought it in 1991 when it was just 5 years old. I converted it to fuel injection over 10 years ago. That is the best thing ever. It starts and drives like a modern car.

When the metric 250 transmission quit at 80,000 miles I converted it to a 2004R with full lockup. The rear end is limited slip.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393002260.jpg

It gets driven in the snow and ice.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1393002308.jpg

It cleans up nice. I get compliments on it all the time. People want to buy it but I tell them I will not take less than $30,000. If some fool pays that much I will sell it. I suspect that will happen right after the Hugh Hefner adopts me.

KFC911 02-21-2014 08:31 AM

Nice Glen...mine sure doesn't seem to get the attention yours does! Does anyone really need to see a picture of a white F150 btw :D?

'80 RoW SC Coupe
108,XXX miles
250-300 miles per week
18 mpg mixed city/hwy (lead foot)
DD for a little over 2.5 years
reliability = 9 out of 10 (which says a lot for a 34 yr old car)
fun to drive = 10 out of 10
Only major repairs were an alternator and 4 point bearing and bearing retainer in trans. Lots of minor repairs and upgrades. I've definetely spent a fair share of time and money on this car. All work performed by me

By far the most fun vehicle I've owned to drive and work on. I'm hooked and will never part with it. I continue to upgrade/improve/maintain it, and it gets better with every mile!

I would definetely recommend to those like me, who have a passion for older type cars that have personality and can turn a wrench.

2000 911 C2, 96k, daily driver with Vrdenstein snow tires until it gets too deep. Aerokit, full leather, carbon fiber interior, metallic black painted center console, 997 shifter with EvoMS SwiftShift and Rennline shift knob, EvoMS V-flow intake, Fister style mufflers. Coming soon: Bilstein Sports, Eibach springs and sways, 18" summer wheels/tires, and hopefully some sport seats if I don't run out of money.

2012 F150 4x4, 36k, 5.0, boat hauler and nasty weather daily driver. This is an old picture, today it has Firestone Destination AT tires, Bilstein 5100 shocks (HUGE improvement), Weather Tech floor liners, front tint matched to the rear, color matched tonneau cover with BedRug, a Raptor cat-back, the orange mirror warts replaced with black, and is getting Weather Tech splash guards and 17" Raptor wheels/tires tomorrow.:) Long term I'd like to add the Boss 302 intake and associated tune, and if I end up keeping the 35" Raptor tires I may consider moving up to the Raptor 4.10 gearing.

Seahawk 02-21-2014 10:37 AM

Bit of a switch at my house for the DD's.

I bought OWP's 2003 4Runner Sport many moons ago, it was our family ride, my wife's DD. A year or so ago, we bought a new family ride, a 2013 Highlander for my wife.

I FINALLY got my hands on the 4Runner as my DD. While it has over 200k on the clock, it runs like just what you want in a DD...and it will chase down the bad guys.

Not so fast. Mrs. Seahawk confessed that she really missed the 4Runner: could we trade, she gets the 4Runner back I drive the Highlander?

So, I'm in this as a DD (not that there is anything wrong with that):

2014 Ford Fiesta ST

6 speed manual

700-ish miles

About 32 mpg

Using since Dec. 2013

So far very reliable!

Miles will stay fairly low on this since I'm retired. The car is an incredible amount of fun to drive. Great mpg considering how hard it is to stay out of boost.

onewhippedpuppy 02-21-2014 11:51 AM

Paul, despite you getting the newer car I think she got the better one.

Ron, that's a great looking ST. I'm a huge fan of both the Focus and Fiesta ST models, they would be tops on my list if I were shopping for a new and fun commuter.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited for the winter. Has a 4.7L V8 and sucks fuel like no tomorrow. Got it in 2011 with 72k miles and now have 91k on it. For the summer I ride the yellow beast! 1973 Mercedes Unimog 416. I know it seems odd not to drive it in the winter, but with the amount of salt they spread on the roads around here, I would hate to have to watch it rust away. One other thing that is nice with the Unimog, is it gets better mileage than the Jeep.

I have 4 collector cars but I drive the crap out of this!

I go up to Monterey for practically everything- the Rennsports, and this was the 60th annual Corvette. Because it is a Chevrolet, I thought I would have some fun with it!

How to Photo Bomb!!!!!!!! These are not photoshop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Done in about 30 minutes and don't ask how I pulled this off!
I think some forum members know my Monterey Corvette Saga! I am a two Corvette Owner, and neither made the trip. Thus had a C2 ride arranged, then it developed mechanical problems that we worked on thru the night to find it wasn't going either. Then I had a ride/drive in a hot 74 Porsche Carrera RSR replica, but the friends wife last minute decided to go. Thus I got some driving time in the Porsche but limitedly. Thus because of the temperment of the Porsche, we decided to use my work car as a support chase vehicle, thus with the tools, jack, auto fluids in the trunk in case of breakdown. I thought I would give the little crap work car some fame! Here is my Cobalt!!!!!!!!!!

Dual, when you get to 10 paces turn and fire!
http://i44.tinypic.com/2v2giyv.jpg

The body lines are classic! Very C7 like indeed!
http://i41.tinypic.com/15po61h.jpg

I am sure Saleen will post this one up on their site!
http://i40.tinypic.com/2dha9mx.jpg

I should have parked it as a T, which would have been a better shot!
http://i42.tinypic.com/264gtoh.jpg

On the quad with the new C7! The only Cobalt ever pictured with it's sibling!
http://i40.tinypic.com/30majx1.jpg

And I have to have a C2 shot so the thread isn't moved to off-topic!!!!!! PS there was no driving onto the Island, this last picture is me there with the GM 7 car special display! The guy guarding the area from entry, liked watching me doing the Photo Bombing and let me park where no other had gone before or during the weekend!
http://i43.tinypic.com/30vdj07.jpg

And no Corvettes or other marques were injured in the taking of these shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But living in Los Angeles, I have been seeing them new C-7s. I came up behind one last night and passed him. Then ended up for awhile in front of him. I have my Do it in a Corvette license plate on my Commuter car, so maybe he appreciated that. I actually think at night as you come up on one from behind, you can tell it is something different and more exotic that what you generally encounter on the road! During the day, I still think it is a lowered Camaro until I get closer!

Year/Make/Model: 1991 Audi 90 20V

Transmission type: 5 speed manual

Hwy/City Driving Environment %: 50/50

Current Mileage: 140,000

Miles driven weekly (to and from work only): 130

Average MPG: 23

How long have you been using this DD: 6 years

Reliability - scale of 1 to 10: 9+

Repairs during ownership: Various replacement bits that go bad with use - tires, brakes, shocks/inserts, coolant hoses, spark plugs, etc. The only real repair was to replace the radiator due to a cracked end tank.

General Comments (if any): Just completed a 700-mile round trip this last weekend. Mostly highway, most of it 65-75mph, 28+mpg. Not too bad.

Would you recommend this to others as a DD (1 to 10 scale; 10 being highly recommended)?: 7. DDing an older Audi is not for everyone. You can't defer maintenance, and you can't just McGyver something together to make it work. That being said, I'm not sure I would trade this car for any other kind of DD. OK, a Cayman S. There, I said it.

BeyGon 02-21-2014 08:53 PM

Daily driver for the last three years, Kaisen helped me get it from Florida. 2001 Z3, it now has 92k miles, 5 speed stick, 3.0 motor. but, I just bought something else for that purpose so this is for sale. Gets around 18 in town and 24 on the road.

Here's my new DD - a 2013 VW Golf R - with its Blizzaks on. I replaced my 2004 R32 with 134k miles on it. It's the perfect car for my 27-mile commute on hilly/curvy roads that are often covered with snow/ice. AWD, 256-hp 4-cylinder turbo, 6-speed manual (only way it comes), IRS, big brakes, great seats & probably the best steering wheel I have ever had (although I would never change the Prototipo in my Carrera). 25 mpg & quite practical. At 8k miles I love it.

2005 Pontiac/Holden GTO 14,500 miles and counting.
6.0 LS2 warmed over: Longtube Headers to high flow cats to full 3 inch exhaust with crossover, Ram air Intake, Reflash, and dyno tuned. 430hp.
rear leveling springs.
6 speed Manual
I've only owned about a month, replaced my Targa as daily driver, kids growing fast and needed more rear legroom, backseat is actually decent for a coupe.
So far zero needs, but gas mileage is certainly dependent on right foot. I drive 14 miles each way to work, mostly city. 16mpg in stop and go if I'm nice. 24 highway.
Very happy with mix of comfort and power, looking forward to road trip.
One letdown is a small trunk and rear seats that don't fold or even have a pass through.
