Goodwill Oil Painting... can I retire now???

Picked this up at my local Goodwill. Real oil. Real old. I think the frame is much newer than the painting. I've found a couple of other artists named Renis, but their style looks different than this one. Subject is Piazza Navona in Rome. Men in the painting are wearing top hats.

Not even sure how to go about having it checked out. Suggestions? Yeah, I know the odds are it's worthless, but the age alone has me intrigued.

There's a great book about the early days of eBay where a guy would buy paintings and add some obscure artists name and sell them for big money. I think he went to jail but it was a good scam for a while.

Hmmm... a Google search shows an artist named Joseph Renis (1879-1954).

I found one painting, but the signature is hard to see. Looks roughly similar though.

Always an intriguing venture. I have some old paintings that I have been unable to research, since I can't even read the signatures. Got 'em from the estate of a great aunt who passed away. She had severe Alzheimers, and bought "real" art and trash. When we went through her stuff, there was no easy way to tell the trash from the treasures.

Tabs was my first thought too! Then I remembered he said two of my family heirlooms: A "Black Velvet Elvis" and "Five Dawgs Playing Poker" weren't "art"

Doesn't look like Joseph Renis' style, and even if it was, not enough to retire on. Art auction result for artist Joseph Renis. Free art prices Reframe it and hang it, not a bad oil, probably sold on the Paris street in the 40's-50's.

Maybe the artist is Peggy Renis. Or Eileen Renis. Or the famous Japanese artist, Irene Renis?

Or walk into an art auctioneer for a free valuation. He can say on the spot; good, bad or ugly.

Anybody who thinks that these two painting were done by the same artist...would like Elvis on Black Velvet...

Yeah... funny you should say that. As I was trying to research the location, I found several photos of people selling art in that area. Made me wonder.
