LED and halogen for me.
|
Where are you finding LEDs that only cost "marginally more" than CFLs of the equivalent brightness? Sure you can buy a LED for not a lot of money, but it is equivalent to a 40 watt incandescent.
|
LEDs - Good color, dimmable, bright, not cheap, but the only non-incan bulbs I'd consider for now.

Amazon shows 1200 options for 60W incan and 200 options 65w floods. -J |
You are not smart enough to pick the right bulb so we eliminated your choices, now you have only one choice and we made it for you!
Sincerely, your progressive gubmint. |
Say goodbye, to soulful lighting.
Architects and electrical design professionals should go chain themselves to the EPA building in lib-like protest. I'm an electrician by trade. The first thing I look at in a building is the lighting. It's a very big part of the overall structure. For mood/appearance, nothing will ever beat incandescent. You think fluorescent flickers? LED is based on flickering. It's how they save energy. They're only on half the time. **** has got to drive animals with high acuity nuts. Carter |

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) - passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush - created new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs. The law is designed to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and make the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources of energy. The entire country will adopt this standard on January 1, 2012. EISA allowed California to implement the national standard one year earlier. |

You can buy incandescents here (and I do, and I have a good stash of them).
The CFLs are garbage (spectrums suck, loaded with mercury, huge embodied energy cost producing and shipping from China, etc.) LEDs are not cost effective at all but are getting better. I needed to replace two outdoor floodlights (old ones lasted 3+ years). Choice was two incandescents matching what I replaced for about $7 or two LEDs for about $110. Guess which option I went with? |
The best overall deal I have found is a 800 lumens LED from salvania for $10 at fleet farm.

7 of the 12 8 footers in the front part of my shop are burnt out . I went to all the box stores, and two local hardware stores, and no love. No longer available. I'm going to try the local electric supply house, but looks like I will be forced to replace all the fixtures .

The hospital where my son teaches started replacing all the fluorescent tubes with LEDs a couple of years ago. Part of the cost savings was firing the full-time light bulb changer.

Don't know about everyone else but the new CFL's don't seem to have the same light output as the old bulbs. Hard for me to read with a 100 watt equivalent CFL. They don't seem to last that long either. I am buying name brand CFL's and they only seem to last a few months.
All the LED bulbs I have seen have been stupid expensive (like $50 a bulb.) |

Philips 100W Equivalent Soft White (2700K) A21 Dimmable LED Light Bulb (E*)-432195 at The Home Depot |
My 'ferrin' 13W CLFs got as hot as a 150W bulb inside the fixture.
Too hot. There were stories of whole house fires... 7.5W LEDs are 3/$20 at Costco. Leave them on all day. Dim-able, but with slight problems. Replaces 40/60W, but twice as bright as equal CLF, half the wattage, and instant on. |

T12's have already been phased out...others have deadlines fast approaching

High output , the stores still have the single pin ones, thanks Sid...

I switched my major lights over to Phillips Hue and LOVE THEM!!! Just a tick pricey but worth it IMO.
