Matthew Mcconaughey

jeez.
what a pathetic acceptance speech.
We had to leave the room.
My own hero?

Jared Leto gave the best speech, Mcconaughey the worst. the worst that i can recall.
Swollen headed prick.
YMMV.

I agree it was weird and poorly conveyed as well as somewhat uncomfortable but I think he just meant to say that his goal is to continually strive to make himself a better person.

Leto's speech was great.

I hate it when narcissists are narcissistic.

Oh, and he's also in trouble for getting an Oscar for playing a dying AIDS patient and not mentioning AIDS in his speech.

I think actors should act and not make speeches.

Watching the Oscar's is like fingernails on the blackboard.

It's so much better when they drone on thanking obscure people.

How dare he thank external forces/god - so egotistical

Seriously, is this thread just blood vessels popping because the guy went on about goals and thanking whatever alignment of stars brought him to such a charmed life?

Seemed to me that he had the best speech of the night - altho, I heard only the last 30-45min's ...and Ellen - Bla weird pathetic humor.

I thought his speech was pretty odd, but he appears to be a pretty odd guy so it was true to himself, at least.

But then, if you are your own hero, there is a lot of symmetry and circular logic at work. Seems appropriate then that this nut case would thank himself, or his hero -which is in fact himself- in his own oscar speech.....

huh?

WTF?!

He brought his mother as well plus the wife.

I did enjoy his acting in "A Time to Kill" along with Sandra Bullock. Before they were super famous.

I thought Lupita Nyong'o had the best speech.

It's very well known in Hollywood that Mcconaughey is a colossally narcissistic blowhard of epic proportion, and he weaved the BS better than anyone else last night.

I think someone who has achieved something as big in his profession as an Oscar has every right to make a speech. If he blows it and becomes a laughing stock, well that's his fail.

Yeah I caught that as well.

One thing if it were fictional but the script was based on (with artistic license) an actual person and events.

I can say without reservation that I have not watched the Oscars for more than 5 minutes at a stretch, and that was a decade or two ago. Not my deal.

But, without reservation, the actors and actresses up for awards have survived the climb, the pyramid of hardship and are immensely talented at what they do. They are gifted people who found the right director, script and place.

However, I no more expect off script insight from Matt Mc than I do from MM...shut up and act/sing.

Easy expectation management.

Does his screen name here start with a "T" or an "N"?

I don't care about his acceptance speech.

I do care about him continuing to play great characters in the ilk of his current portrayal of Rust Cohle on True Detective. It's fantastic.

I think perhaps a few of you didn't quite understand the point of his speech. It wasn't what I'm reading that was suggested in many of the comments on this thread.

I'm happy that he kept politics out of his speech, which is not the norm for Hollywood.

I enjoy his movies.
