It's an epic fail, it requires you to plug in your phone to the car

Why is that a fail? My phone is usually plugged into the car anyways because it's charging...

Agreed, I can do so much just with my iPhone and uConnect now, plus if you don't have your phone does that mean you loose Nav, music, etc? I can charge my phone via cable now, or go wireless, phone Siri text music all work wirelessly, why would I have to plug it in for "newer" tech?

I will make a guess/speculation - the carmakers are concerned about security of the car's systems, especially the engine/chassis controls of course, but also the information/entertainment systems. If the cars' infotainment systems get compromised, maliciously or just with bugs, that would be a disaster - think warranty costs, reputation, headlines, lawsuits. With a wired connection, they probably think they can wall off the plugged-in smartphone. If the infotainment system has a WiFi network, they might be more concerned about vulnerabilities, and/or they might feel the need to put on so much security/login process that it would simply piss consumers off. I realize cars allow smartphones to connect by Bluetooth, but perhaps that doesn't have the same security issues as WiFi or perhaps the Bluetooth connections are for such a limited purpose that they feel safe.

The answer is simple.

Plugging it in takes the phone out of the drivers hand.

Given all that, when a car company partners with Apple, the QNX team (or maybe the embedded Android team or whomever runs the infotainment system) absolutely has to make sure everything that CarPlay needs is in place. That's why Apple works with them. Which is pretty much what they had to do in the past, albeit in a much simpler way, for the old iPod connectors program.

There's a huge advantage to this approach. If you have an iPhone, you get in, plug in, CarPlay comes up, and you go. If you don't have an iPhone, you get in and whatever infortainment experience the manufacturer has built-in comes up. Everyone is happy.

If Apple made the whole stack, it'd be different. Apple would either have to get the car company to agree to iPhone exclusivity — which seems highly unlikely — or the car company would have to get Apple to agree to build in support for Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and feature phones — which seems downright unimaginable. In other words, no one would be happy. About all those CarPlay runs on QNX stories... | iMore

Volvo will have an interface very similar to that standard on their new cars starting with the new XC90 next March. FWIW, Apple said it was the best interface they've ever seen in a car.

Big 'if.'

Assuming that this technology push product is compelling tech... Apple is not even close to a market standard of what people carry. Seems an important bit for any seeking to drive a standard.

Side note: is this really compelling tech? The next iPod? I don't see it. ...it's nothing horrible, but seems to be nothing more than a derivative offering in a sea of derivative offerings.

IMO, Apple would be smart to get on board with larger screens on the phone. But what do I know - I've been saying that for years.

Maybe they don't have the cash on hand to offer more than one size phone.

Put 4 doors on the concept coupe, raise it up a couple of inches, and you've got the S80 and XC70 replacement.

Oh I dunno Glen.

Apple seem plenty smart enough to know who their audience is and build devices that they want.

iPhone users are 40% of the market share for those making $75 k or more, you know, the people that can afford a Volvo, 49% for people making $150k or more, you know the people that can afford a New Benz or Ferrari.

Not a bad standard at all.

So then, you are saying that Apple has been smart to limit their phone offerings to tiny screens?

tell me more.
