Breakfast for a Hawk

This morning at work. Graphic pic below of a seagull. Wish I had a better camera at the time.

Send him this way. He's more than welcome to feast on the pigeons on our roof.

Pretty common around here.

Pretty much any time of any day there one sitting on a neighbors roof.

One of the reasons you don't let your cats outside.

I thought maybe you and Paul went out for pancakes.

Saw one similar to that a few days ago, up in a oak tree that must be at least 200 years old. Have seen a red tail, maybe the same one, take a squirrel a few times when walking the dog in the time I have lived here.

There is a red tail that lives out in my woods. It uses my bird feeder as a "fly through" window. I have seen it pluck a cardinal or morning dove off the feeder while barely putting the flaps down. Those birds never knew what hit em.

When I lived in PA, I would take my morning coffee out by the pool so I could listen to the hawks calling. There were no rabbits or squirrels around as they were quickly dispatched. They are amazing. One morning I came out to find a large wing or tail feather floating in the pool. It still is tucked into the band of my straw hat. A gift from my friends.

I love it when the raptors return to Calgary in the springtime.
There are several different small hawks and falcons around town and the community I live in boarders a large natural parkland area (Edworthy Park).

I had a small Sparrowhawk hit the front window of my house a few years back and was stunned lying in the fresh May snow that had fallen the previous evening.
I ran into the garage and grabbed my welding gloves and picked the bird up and it perched on my hand for almost a half hour while I warmed it up in the sun in the sheltered back yard. It is hard to describe how beautiful these birds are when you have an opportunity to examine them closely and how well designed they are for surviving.

The Ospreys have already returned to the park and the Red Tailed hawks and others will return shortly. Our area is frequented by bald eagles surfing the wind on the ridge and when the golden eagles are migrating you might get a glimpse of one if you are lucky.

The return of the raptors signals the beginning of spring for me. I can't wait.

One thing on my bucket list is falconry.

Note how all predators eat the liver first. I do the same thing over the hunting campfire. Never leave town without onion and a frying pan!

Thanks for sharing!
