Wes Anderson Fans
What am i missing?
I DID like the Th Royal Tannenbaums, but the others? Meh. Moonrise Kingdom was mildly ambushing. Just drove all the way to Sunset/Vine to take my 20 y.o. Daughter to see Grand Budapest Hotel andim just convinced I'm missing something???

Depends on how you like your narrative structure and if you're into abstraction, farce, and having cinematography and style be characters in the movie. I thought Moonrise Kingdom was one of the best films I've ever seen, and GBH isn't far behind. It reminds me of Midsummer Night's Dream.
fwiw I didn't really care for Royal Tannenbaums. So there's a butt for every seat... |

Moonrise Kingdom is one of my favorite films. Probably seen it 5 times. It's also our 22 year old daughter's favorite movie. Just seems to resonate with some people. The others? Haven't seen 'em.

There is a LOT going on in a Wes Anderson movie.
Watch the final scene in "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou;" - one long scripted take while the credits roll. While the credits roll. Where most people are leaving the theatre.... I've been a fan since Bottle Rocket. I'm not convinced that Rushmore is as good as the critics say, but every other movie from him has had me thinking of the film for days afterwords, including "The Fabulous Mr. Fox" Good times.... Gonna see GBH this weekend....

I thought Life Aquatic was uneven - required a lot of patience on the part of the viewer and didn't always pay off for me. I think he really hit his stride on Moonrise Kingdom and now GBH. He makes the same film over and over again, but how he does it, and the nuance and detail he puts into things makes every one different.

I didn't like a lot of his stuff, but recently a friend sat me down and made me watch "Bottle Rocket"
It has some great moments. I find myself quoting it all the time.

"2000 cast members, 3 orchestras, 33 rooms, 300 years, ALL IN ONE TAKE" The film is rather droll itself, but everything else should be appreciated for what it is. |

I've only seen The Royal Tennenbaums. I spaced out for most of the movie. I remember it being over and wondering what I had just done with the previous two hours. I found it tedious and uninteresting. So much so, that won't risk wasting another two hours of my life on one of Anderson's films.

Loved Royal Tennenbaums, Life Aquatic and Rushmore.

When I hear Todd describe them it really makes me want to like them. Then I see one and I'm just unimpressed. To me, they are shallow and just mildly funny and I don't really care about the characters. I really do like and get most art (re cinema for example I thing woody Allen and Bergman were geniuses) but I don't get Wes Anderson. Must be me.

fwiw I really don't care for Woddy Allen films. He annoys the crap out of me. So just goes to show you...butt for every seat.
People have different tastes and get different things out of films. Anderson treats every scene like a painting and there are surreal and farcical aspects that you'll either like or hate. It isn't about "getting it" - it is more about what aesthetic you like. Anderson's is very strong and should polarize viewers. |

Overall I like his work. I like the little details that often get overlooked; the set design, the background conversation, the music etc. I liken them to a play put on film.
Here's a recent film of his commissioned by Prada. Not for everyone, but entertaining to me. |

There are few directors whose work I will automatically buy tickets to see. Wes Anderson and the Coen Bros are on that short list.
Really enjoyed GBH as far as I got. The local Landmark had a power outage 2/3 of the way through. Going back to see the whole thing this week.

i enjoy filmmakers who make, iconic films. i also enjoy tim burton for that reason. the subject matter is always an icon, a mailable subject that represents a group or population. |

Me too, and I'll add Jim Jarmusch to the list...
