That happened in Ontario Canada.

I worked in the cell industry for much of the 90's and remember well the big campaign's to ensure no restrictive rules were placed on use in the car and the PR about the phones not causing any distractions. BS, all of it.

Had a similar situation the other day as an idiot started to make a u turn in front of me, started to pull right and then back to left toward the center of the road, never even saw me behind him. Fortunately, I was far enough back I was able to stop before reaching his position. He was distracted with something.

I get the impression that the driver of the SUV didn't anticipate that accident, and wasn't aware of what was happening until he was hitting the truck. Maybe the space between vehicles seemed compressed due to the nature of the lens on the dash cam..... Lucky no one was hurt bad,...

The couple in the truck are friends of friends. The Police had previously charged the La Broquerie (where he lives) man with failing to yield to traffic. The video was posted on You Tube and a friend of the couple pulled the extract showing him on a cell phone. Then the police got a hold of the video. The driver was also charged with using his cellphone while driving. This happened about 5 min from my ex's aunt & uncles place.

I wouldn't say the driver of the Dakota was a D'bag. He did apologize and say it was completely his fault. (We're Canadian, polite to a fault.)
I would lean more to the side of labeling him a dumba$$. It's interesting the driver of the vehicle with the dash cam first drifted left, thinking perhaps that the idiot coming on to the highway would see him and stop. Experience tells you that they will stop when they realize someone is coming down the lane they are trying to cross. Unfortunately, a mind engaged in a telephone conversation is not as aware of surroundings. Many years ago, I had someone pull out of a side road in front of me, but they panicked and stopped on the centre line. By the time they got stopped, I was already comitted to my escape. I went behind them, into the side road and back out onto the road I was travelling. ![]() Be careful out there. Best Les

I think the old guy in the SUV wanted to force his way past by swerving into the left (oncoming) lane. He realized at the last moment that ("oh no!) this wasn't gonna work.
I see a lot of dumba$$ driving around here, so when I see a car that is dangerously close to pulling into my path, I usually slow down or brake. I assume that the guy doing that is dumb enough to pull out in front of me and I take it upon myself to avoid a wreck. I've saved myself many times this way. |

![]() Think about it at 60mph (100kph) you are traveling 88 feet per second and if you watch the dash cam vehicle it is under heavy braking that's why it swerves to the left then right. The cops said they did the reconstruction and that this totally unavoidable for the truck with the right of way.

Idiots on their phones are the main reason my motorcycle riding has drastically decreased.

Mark, the guy in the pickup is 100% at fault.
What a lot of us are saying is that you see someone starting to pull dangerously close to the intersection then you should slow down and subsequently go hard on the brakes when they cross into your lane. |

It's a complete waste of time to second guess the driver's reaction, or to think you might have done better. Your mind and body rarely act the way you 'wish' they would in those kinds of situations.

This is a strange coincidence. I had two panic stops just now on the same trip. One was an idiot turning left in traffic and the next was a pedestrian. I was driving the 1-ton truck with dualies. That thing don't stop quickly, no matter what. It's easy to lock up the rears and flat spot them, which ruins $1K in truck tires in under a second. I did what I posted earlier today (lift off the gas, cover the brake pedal, then full brakes on when idiot pulls in front of me), and barely missed smashing a little Chevy into the next lane. What an idiot! I expect that sort of thing by now I guess...

I would have been watching that truck from a quarter mile down the road, and assumed that he was not going to stop. Because of that truck, I would have been easing off the gas as I approached that intersection, automatically. I do it all the time, and I'm sure it's not anything really special, many others do the same thing. Maybe the guy who filmed the video was too busy on the phone to notice! ![]() |

That does not mean the guy pulling out didn't violate right of way. These cell phone people are complete morons and should be imprisoned!
