Yup, E12. Has M30 (Big Six), not M20 (Little Six). 528i is Euro-only delivery; about 140 BHP (528e - M20 - about 96 BHP).

Not a real Alpina, but Alpina bits (wheels, gauges) look authentic; may be worth something. I too have a soft spot for E28s.

Good luck.

Ahhh good spot...yes E12. Lots of interchangeability between the E12 and E28 though?

Jays72T 03-25-2014 09:32 AM

I had an M5 for a few years and loved it. That E12 looks nice, always like them as well.

sand_man 03-25-2014 09:49 AM

The E28 M5 has been on my list for as long as I can remember. Just never found the right car...

Ive been told e28 M5s are pretty expesnive to run. Can anybody substantate that?

The M-specific bits are pricey, the rest is standard E28. From my reading I think that a top end rebuild is fairly common at high mileage, but the bottom end is very stout. Much like a 911, an engine rebuild could easily cost more than the car is worth. The rear self leveling suspension can be problematic, many replace it with standard shocks.

E28 = eta engine?

did anyone mention Dinan yet?

OTOH, there is a cost to buying an old car and building it up into something else... if that greatly exceeds the cost to do very long -term refurbs on "what you originally wanted" then maybe you want to not buy an E28 but as one person mentioned look for that elusive 535is?

I'm thinking of having to refurb all the rubber bushings in the suspension, replace shocks etc. - dunno if an old 535is would need that like a 911 would.

Rubber bushings, what are you talking about - polybronze bushings baby. My 911 has no rubber anywhere in the suspension and that is how I like it. Oh, wait, this car would have to please my wife too . . . crap.

you need a new grease gun

No, they're not really. The 750 brake upgrade is good, the standard brakes are fine but warp the rotors. As mentioned, the self leveling rear suspension requires service-it has nitrogen globes like a Benz and they go regularly...sorta. Control arm bushings wear frequently. Usual BMW radiator life. If you need valvetrain or tranny work, $$$$.

The joke at the dealership was that M5 stood for multiply the parts price by 5. Not really true.

But day to day, no. They don't eat anything expensive. Fuel mileage is 17-18 in mixed driving.
They have normal sized oilpans (the cartridge style filter and oring can be a pita). The engine is hella stout, the same basic block/head made 700 some hp in the M1 racecars, I'm told, so its understressed. In the 130k I owned mine, the only truely ouch moment was the trans (around 6k iirc) and I can't say that that was normal.

If you buy one, I hope you don't mind crappy A/C.

Geez, there's one on fleabay now for 44k! Not that he'll get that, but I guess they're now in the sweet spot.

The A/C isn't killer, and the greenhouse is big, but if its maintained it works ok...

I've had two E28s - a 520i (M20 2.0 six) and a 535i (M30).

The 520i was about as tepid as you'd expect, but the 535i rocked. I truly loved that car.

I almost regret selling it as much as I did selling my mid-year coupe.

speeder 03-25-2014 09:27 PM

The last e28 I owned had good A/C but I'm in coastal CA., not AZ. It blew cold.

I've owned 3 of them, both 528e and 533i. They're all great cars, the 533i w/ 5-speed was one of the best cars I've ever owned out of 100+ cars.

You're talking to a guy that wants to go from a 911 to an E28. lol

908/930 03-25-2014 10:30 PM

Probably one of the best built cars on the planet, my 533i /5speed had 733,000 km on the clock, with original bottom end.
