Vehicle Trailer Rentals

Researching for a potential future move...

If I do move, I will have to tow my RX-8 on a trailer with my Silverado. I would like to use a real car trailer, not a car dolly. It appears to me that Ryder, Penske, and Budget will only rent trailers to be towed by their trucks--they will not rent trailers to be towed by customer vehicles. U-Haul will rent trailers for customer vehicles, but they have surge brakes. I'd prefer real trailer brakes.

Are there any national rental companies that will let me tow a car trailer with my own truck, have real trailer brakes, and will do one-way moves?

Probably not, with a 1500. When I tried to rent with my F150, I was told I would need at lead an F250.

Which is kind of crazy, because the RX-8 on a trailer is at about half of the 1500's towing capacity.

I tow my 968 or 944 with my silverado 1500 all the time. My trailer has electric brakes on one axle. Half the time, they don't work (I keep meaning to fix that...) but the truck really doesn't have any problems stopping the trailer; it has more than enough brakes.
I wouldn't worry too much about surge brakes vs electric on the rented trailer. Just make sure the trailer balance is right.
You might also consider shipping the car; if you add up the cost of the trailer, added fuel (I get 11-12 mpg towing vs. 18-19 not towing with my 2010/5.3l) you might not be far from the cost of a shipper.

Why do you require electronic trailer brakes? I have surge brakes on 6000 lb and 23' worth of boat and trailer, it's a total non-issue with my F150. I've used the UHaul car trailers numerous times, make sure you bring some extra ratchet straps because their tie-downs won't always fit around your tires, especially on lower cars.

One of the places I will likely have to go is I-24 near Chattanooga. I find it scary in the truck when I'm not towing anything.

As my truck driving brother in law tells me, just put on your turn signal and start going. As long as you're bigger they'll get out of your way.

I blew a tire on the aforementioned boat trailer on I35 in the DFW area, during rush hour, in the fast lane, and with a shoulder just big enough for the trailer. If you want fun, try dragging a crippled trailer across four lanes of rush hour traffic to escape onto an exit ramp. I left DFW with four new trailer tires and a new spare, I'd prefer not to repeat that experience.

My friend bought a trailer and sold it at his destination. Coming from tex to Cali. I think he made a few bucks. It was a risk but it worked out for him.
