Histogram on Digital Cameras

Can anyone explain the Histogram displays on digital cameras to me?

Too much to the left means it's underexposed (too dark). Too much to the right means it's overexposed (too bright).

Ideally, it should be mostly in the middle.

You should also use the light meter if you have a dslr. Same concept except it tells you if it's under or overexposed before you take the shot.

if the graph clips on one side, then you lost detail on that side. With most digital cameras, you're better off being slightly overexposed than underexposed.

It depends on what you are shooting. If it is dark and it's supposed to be dark it will be to the left. If it goes off the edges it means that detail is lost and you won't recover it in post.

Very good method to get light right!

I also agree with AFC-911 on using the DSLR's built-in light metering functionality - the camera will tell you in advance if you are over or under exposing.
