Well done, looks like he's on cloud 9.

Cool car, lucky kid!

cashflyer 04-01-2014 07:14 PM

Not terribly expensive.

Turbo S, $8750
1989 944 Turbo S

"average" 944, $5400
86 Porsche 944 Silver 97k miles

Needs TLC, $2700
Porsche 944 sale or trade

When my son was 16 he used to drive my V8 914. If the kid is responsible enough it matters not what they drive, just how they drive it.

Some here would vehemently disagree with you. They would insist that you are an irresponsible parent for not putting your kid in a car with all of the very most modern technology, to include 360 degree airbag deployment, 5 wheel anti-lock braking, and trans-dimensional accident avoidance radar. Oh holy f*k don't dare put them in an old pickup truck or you will be tarred, feathered and sodomized.

wonderful

I think this is awesome. I must admit, part of me wants to put my kid in a used Subaru Impreza for 4 wheel drive (tons of snow up here). However, a classic sports car would be super cool and my kid will likely need a little boost of cool...he's kind of the quiet one.

Shadetree930 04-02-2014 04:58 AM

I love me some 944. Good choice.

crustychief 04-02-2014 06:57 AM

Congratulations to him on his accomplishments and congrats to you, now you have less errands to run!

rrental 04-02-2014 07:02 AM

Very cool! Good for him! Not cool to judge the kid on his or dad's choice. Not our business!

My kid is almost 14 and saving for a car for the last 2 years. He just sold his ATV he had for 2 years and actually managed to gain $400 out of it!

He has his mind set on a Subaru and I am sure he will drive one. Heck, he's got more money in his savings account than the average 20 yr old!

berettafan 04-02-2014 07:10 AM

Seems like a great choice of a car.

Not fast by todays standards

DIY friendly thanks to Pelican

Dad will enjoy helping DIY since it's a Porsche and not an appliance

Fun to AX and DE in.

Not everybody has one.

fastfredracing 04-02-2014 08:09 AM

If you can get him to do his own maintenance on it , you will really have the makings of a fine young man there. Nice car, and I think that would make a great first vehicle. Solid as a tank ,and a rewarding car to drive as well. He will probably grow old , always talking , and dreaming about his early driving years, in his little red Porsche. Late cars also had airbags, if that is an S2, or late turbo , you should have two front bags.

Omg some of these comments......

Congratulations to your son. I hope he has many adventures and develops a love for Porsches. Looks like a good kid.

HardDrive 04-02-2014 09:39 AM

Well done dad!

JD159 04-02-2014 02:08 PM

Widebody. So you want your kids to drive a beater? A beater is an unsafe vehicle. A safe vehicle costs as much or more then a 944. My dad paid for most of my 944. Since then, I have poured my blood sweat and tears into it. I have come to respect hard work and truly appreciate the uniqueness of older classic vehicles.

I'm 22, and would never want my kids to buy a beater. I've driven beaters while I worked at a dealership. Not gonna let my kid get one. I'll gladly buy them something better, within reason.

To the OP. Great looking first car!!

You have some learning to do.

I personally make the presumption that OP's kid is deserving of such a neat first car as evidenced by OP's choice to endorse it (whether financially or simply through permission). I hope that my kids will be mature and responsible enough so that I can one day share a picture like that. I suspect it's a fantasy of many parents here.

But don't discount the value of a beater as a first car. Many teens are careless dumbasses and perfectly suited for ratty paint and door dings. That doesn't necessarily make the car unsafe.

I hope your kids end up being deserving of the car you think you want to 'buy them'. But please don't assume that those who insist on their kids paying their own freight and starting out with a beater are selfish or thoughtless.

JD159 04-02-2014 05:20 PM

Not sure where I assumed that those who insist on their kids paying their own freight and starting out with a beater are selfish or thoughtless.

I'm sure what constitutes a beater is relative. We sold 500 dollar cars that I drove and did not feel comfortable driving, but did not have door dings or ratty paint. They weren't safe.

I also drive a 98 Honda as my "beater". It has airbags, little rust, dings but well maintained and feels solid. I bought it for 1k. I wouldn't call it a beater, but some would. I also know its history, as its family owned.

What I am saying is that if my kid, supposing they are not rotten careless dumbasses, haven't been able to find or save enough for a car that is relatively safe, I'll pony up a extra dollars until it meets a better safety standard.

Please don't assume that my idea of a beater is exterior, when it is in fact mechanical soundness. Everyone has some learning to do. My 944 has taught me a lot, and it only continues to do so. It probably always will.

Beautiful car! I bought my S2 (with my own cash, working in IT) when I was 15. I learned so much from that car and that is partially why I went into engineering. On the other hand, i'm a couple k into a full rebuild right now (third cylinder is scored, so i have to bring the block to a machinist and buy oversized pistons). It's a blessing and a curse...

My point is that in the context of modern cars, a 951 isn't the supercar that some think. Sincerely, a proud former 951 owner.;)

in fact, i challenge them to beat my car to 140mph from 80mph.

Down boy! Compensate much?

The 951 is a quick car stock. It's a fast car modified. But it's not a supercar by any modern standards. And an Accord sedan will still beat you 0-60.:p

That's funny because his first vehicle was a rusty Ford Ranger. It was given to his Auto Shop teacher and he bought it from him with money he made working after school at a local Auto Body shop. They worked on the mechanicals at school and it passed a Safety Inspection before he bought it and put it on the road. The truck was actually in my name because at 16 he couldn't technically own it or insure it.
