steam punk minus the punk 1935 locomotive build

There’s no telling how long the engine you see built in the video actually ran for, but we suspect it was 20-25 years at the absolute most. Like the process of constructing them, steam locomotives became arcane (but beautiful) symbols of the past.

The CNC machines and robots must be in the back room and not on camera.

I worked in the pattern shop of a foundry in the mid 80s to pay for my education. The foundry part has not changed much. I worked on some wooden patterns that were made in the late 1800s. Each pattern maker who worked on it had stamped his initials and dated a small brass tag affixed to the plate.
This is becoming a lost art.

I'm not sure there's anything I would geek out more over than this video.

Thanks for posting it!

That was quite a video - thanks for posting.

Knowing that steam locomotive went through water so much faster than fuel, and forgetting for a moment the compound locomotives that had more power, was there ever an attempt to save water by converting the steam back into water? Considering they depleted their water at tremendous rates.

Thanks for sharing. Those forges are impressive. I wish they would have shown more of the machining, i.e. where did the massive crank come from?

The lack of safety equipment in this time period is scary. My eyes hurt looking at the guy drilling holes ... gloves also appear to have been something for pussies.

Love the fat guy smith at 5:00.

That was fantastic! The shots of the overhead crane moving the locomotive was great. And the axle is a crankshaft! I never gave it any thought before, but of course it is!

gotta love the comment at 4:50 "Machinery does not rein everywhere..."

OSHA training video?

Too bad they didn't have grand leadership like today. You know, to tell them "You didn't build that. Someone else made that happen." ...oh wait. wrong forum.

Some years ago a co worker of mine was a precision tool collector. His grandfather was a toolmaker in the old country (Germany early 1900s).
The toolmakers uniform of a white shirt , bow tie, and apron was a hard earned status symbol.

Yes, very cool video.

There's just something mesmerizing about steam locomotives that cannot be duplicated by modern equivalents. Don't know what it is, exactly, but the attraction seems to be universal. I'd like to think it has something to do with the physical presence of such a massive, complex piece of machinery and the fact so much of its complexity is visible. Pipes, pistons, valves, gauges, connecting rods, blasts of steam, belches of smoke, dripping fittings--they are out in the open for all to see. Every change in speed manifests itself in a new, visible choreography of these components. The engineer can see, hear, and feel every input. Turn a valve or move a lever and a gauge needle changes or steam is vented or the "chug" of the piston alters its rhythm. Something real and immediate happens to the locomotive. Its like the skin has been removed from a human body and we can see the muscles, bones, veins, and tendons as the body goes through strenuous exercise. It's a metal machine, yes, but the human can easily relate. It becomes "alive" in a way that can be seen, heard, and felt. It becomes alive in a way that is not possible in an enclosed, streamlined, diesel-electric powered alternative. It's just not the same.

But I digress. Great video, thanks for the post.

Awesome post. Question: how does the sand for the casting stay together?
