1 year ago on this forum

Wayne,

Would it be possible to find some of the forum threads from last year on this day?

This Forum ended up being the only website that I could get any information from during the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon. All of the major news sites were flooded. I think the posts made that day captured the horror, confusion, anger, and disbelief that existed across the country.

I apologize if anybody finds this off topic.

Thanks Chris, that was one of the threads that I remember. I should have looked in the archives

Look at what jlex posted at 10:18 a.m., Sept. 11, 2001: "We'll see who the responsible party is eventually: I would be willing to bet, however, that we'll see the mastermind to be Osama Bin Laden. Here's a link for more info. on that terrorist:

This BBS was where I first heard about it. I was the first in the office to find out about the attacks because I saw that thread here on this board!

here is the one that I think of. It was a funny start to what would turn out to be a disaster.

If you have a quick download capability, this pictorial, with music, is the best retrospective of that day that I have seen: http://www.politicsandprotest.org/

I don't want to read that all over again and won't, ever. Not interested in anything I or anyone else had to say that day.

I re-read *that* thread yesterday. The comments posted that day are very moving; as they reflect this group in very complex circumstances.
However, the predominate theme I saw, as I read the posted events of the day, was not pain floating to the surface, but rather an immediate acute focus to the problem at hand.
As Americans, we have shown ourselves again to be expeditious, perceptive, problem solvers.
And, THAT is nothing to be ignored.

I was not a regular reader of this board on September 11, 2001. I read it regularly now. Cheers to those of you who used this board to share information. I was lucky. I work from my home and was able to turn the TV on for the entire day. I can only imagine how frightening it must have been for people who were deprived of information and left to guess what was happening.

My feeling on 9/11/01 was anger. My feeling on 9/11/02 is still anger. We should not rest until the job of hunting down and eliminating each and every gutless, heartless terrorist is done.

We can celebrate our strength and resilience in the aftermath of 9/11. We, as a nation, have earned the right to do that. We remember the dead and salute the heroes.

As Colin Powell said in a briefing during the Gulf War, we will find the enemy, cut it off and kill it. The same applies today.

This is still war.

The Saudi Ambassador to the UN has just finished giving a speech, and walks out into the lobby where he meets President Bush.

They shake hands and as they walk the Saudi says, "You know, I have just one question about what I have seen in America."

President Bush says "Well your Excellency, anything I can do to help you, I will do."

The Saudi whispers "My son watches this show 'Star Trek' and in it there are Russians, and Blacks, and Asians, but never any Arabs. He is very upset. He doesn't understand why there are never any Arabs in Star Trek."

President Bush laughs and leans toward the Saudi, and whispers back, "It's because it takes place in the future...."

This one is my favorite. Great song by Victoria Williams, and I find the design to be very well done...

Planter91C2, I think your post is in very poor taste. As I understand it, it's a joke about a future where an entire ethnic group has been wiped out. There are a lot of Arabs on this board, and there were a lot who died on 9/11 in New York and Washington.

I'm not going to remove the post. But I want you to know that I find it pretty reprehensible.

yeah, i guess if you take it literally it is pretty bad. i didn't take it that seriously, but see how you could.

i guess me posting it was a combination of acting before thinking, being insensitive, and having some negative feelings regarding the people we are at war with. in retrospect it shouldn't have been copied and posted.

actually, it is a really stupid joke.

i copied it from another board i read sometimes but am not a member of, an outdoorsman type forum. i guess some of those guys necks are pretty red. most of those guys are from places like Texas or Alabama; southern boy types. i'm sure they find it hilarious.

sometimes it is interesting to see how people in different parts of the country think.

so, if anyone was offended; sorry.

oh, sorry guys... i just reread my reply to Jack and the board.

in no way did i mean to offend anyone from Texas or Alabama.
i also did not mean to offend anyone from the southern part of the United States. i didn't even mean to offend anyone who could be construed in any way as a redneck... oh, and i didn't mean to offend any outdoorsman types either...

Planter, fair enough. It was just a joke.

For the record, we aren't at war with 'the Arabs'. For better or worse, Arab countries are some of America's most doggedly loyal allies. We're at war (if that's even the right term for it) with far-right religious fanatics. (Oddly enough, it was also a handful of far-right fanatics who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma.)

Since far-right groups have a history of following through on threats to eliminate entire populations based on their ethnicity, I'm willing to play the 'sensitive guy' on a point like this.

I was vacationing in Ireland when Oklahoma was bombed, and happened to be watching a TV in a mall shortly thereafter. I assumed the culprits to be of foriegn descent, as did most of the world. As it turned out, my shame deepened when I found out that Tim McVey was a former member of the NY Army Nat'l Guard.

However, my pride returned following the response of all services rendered following 9/11/01 (MC Res., Air Guard, CG Res., Naval Militia, and Army Guard) during duty in NYC. My memories will forever be scarred by the sights, stench and choking dust experienced during the recovery. But my spirit will also remain bouyed by the selfless deeds I witnessed during that awful time when a city came together as one. The world mourned with us, and hopefully will rejoin with us as we look to crush the evil ones that perpetrated this crime. I'm not much for ignorance, but I hate evil.

Sorry for the rant.
