SHOTGUN!! my BIL wants a shotgun..Browning Auto 5?

my stepdad passed a while back..he has a pile of shotguns.

my BIL was shotgun shopping and i told him not to buy one, since i could give him one.

i know there are five NIB auto-5's. my brother is getting on a plane tomorrow to visit me, and he is bringing a shotgun for him. my mom wants to give my BIL a shotgun, since she heard he is looking for one to step into the firearm arena.

what is the deal with the Auto Five anyways? is it any good? my brother and i both talked about it, and we feel it is a tad complicated for my BIL. i've never shot one before, but i know it has gas ports..adjustments, stuff like that. they dont kick, right?

since my BIL wants to NOT hunt, but shoot the occasional clays, and cover the front door in case the meteor hits..i think my brother is going to bring a Smith and Wesson Model 1100. i remember it being kinda like a remmy 1100, but lighter. this one has an improved cylinder barrel. neat gun..you dont see a lot of them.

If it's a 20g, that's great. If it's a "Sweet Sixteen" even better! Browning autos are the tits, especially if they're Belgian.

A-5 are adjustable for different rounds of shot. Not overly complicated but perhaps too much gun for a newbie, especially cleaning and maintenance.

I love mine but if your BIL is only going to shoot clays, I'd go with a sxs or an over/under.

A 5's are great guns, but Seahawk is right they are a bit complicated for newbies. Also, if he is only your BIL, I believe you must transfer it, you can't just give it to him. Straight down the line is fine, but he is off on a branch of the tree, so to speak. Especially if he is in another state.

I thought a thread about A 5s should have a picture or two. This is a Belgian made A5 Light Twelve built in 1967 and although I shot skeet with it, I think it's more suited for field use. The fit, finish and even checkering on these early Brownings seems pretty nice but I really haven't compared them to a more modern version. It might be for sale.

I have my dads old Belgian A5 (12). As a kid, I was fascinated by the way an empty gun chambered the first shell loaded. Disappointing video. Mine is much better sounding. I love my A5

I've had 2 Auto-5's. First, a 20 when I was an 8 year old (a lot like the schlub who has to carry a 50 on his back in the infantry) and then a 12.

xlnt, but heavy - Browning claims the bluff makes it easy to have the eyes and cheek come up to the gun for aiming, etc. - I dunno

But, if I were to buy a shotgun today it would be a very, very high quality over & under - they are elegant, and they force you to be better. If you need more than 2 shots with different chokes, you need to hone your abilities.

From a liability standpoint, I would tread VERY carefully about giving anyone a weapon.

I'd sell 1 or 2 of them, get the proceeds, and let him obtain ownership through the proper channels. It may come back he fails an FBI background check or whatever they do to "clear" you, either outcome he's cleared or not to purchase a firearm, let it be HIS liability...not yours.
